Today at CrossFit North Star, we come together for "Tubby’s Tribute" — a workout that holds deep, personal meaning for our community.

Most Hero WODs in CrossFit are done to honor fallen service members and first responders — those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. But sometimes, our heroes aren’t in uniform. Sometimes, they’re the people closest to us — our family, our friends, our brothers.

"Tubby’s Tribute" was created by Coach Nate to honor his late brother, Alex “Tubby” Menard. This will be our second year performing this workout as a gym, not only to support Nate, but to carry forward Alex’s memory with purpose and love.

This year, we’re also supporting the Face It Foundation, a Minnesota-based nonprofit helping men overcome depression through peer support, connection, and education — all free of charge. Their mission is one of hope, healing, and showing men they’re never alone.

At CrossFit North Star, we believe workouts like this matter. We do them to remember. To connect. To feel. And to honor the heroes in all our lives — whether they wore a badge, a uniform, or simply gave us their heart.

Tubby’s Tribute honors Alex “Tubby” Menard, a beloved brother, friend, and talented individual whose life was impacted by opioid addiction. Created by Coach Nate, this annual workout celebrates Al’s memory while raising awareness for mental health and recovery. This year, all donations support the Face It Foundation, a Minnesota nonprofit providing free peer support, education, and connection for men facing depression and mental health challenges.

Recovery gadgets can absolutely help.
Massage guns, compression boots, foam rollers, ice baths — they all have their place.

But the biggest recovery wins usually still come from the basics:
😴 Quality sleep
💧 Hydration
🥗 Good nutrition
🚶 Walking
📆 Consistency

You don’t need a perfect routine or expensive setup to recover well. Small habits done consistently tend to make the biggest difference over time.

A reminder that nobody walks into their first class feeling completely confident.

✔ Unsure if they’ll fit in

That’s normal.

June Member of the Month: Frank B. 👏

A regular at the 6am class and sometimes 11:30, Frank may not have the longest answers to our MoM questions — but that’s okay because his actions definitely speak louder than his words.

Frank truly puts in the work. Whether it’s working on weaknesses outside of class, attending specialty classes, or simply trying to be 1% better every time he walks through the door, he’s always looking for ways to improve.

He’s also someone who genuinely wants everyone around him to succeed. Frank is always supportive of the people he shares class with.

Between family life, kids sports, and a packed schedule, it’s tough for him to make a lot of the extra events around the gym (which also made it surprisingly hard to get workout photos of him 😂) — but the time he does spend at North Star, he makes count.

Very deserving of June Member of the Month.
