Summer camp highlight: arts and crafts! 🎨🖌️ Each cabin group gets to come up with a cabin name and design their own flag. After exploring the garden, campers learn how to make prints with different plant parts, learning more about the important roles that plants play in our lives. Every camper gets the chance to express their creativity and learn some new artistic skills!

The past month, we started taking campers to visit our neighbor, Gale Woods Farm. A real working farm, Gale Woods offers a great opportunity for learners of all ages to learn about land stewardship, food production, and agriculture. Campers have the chance to tour the farm, meet the animals, and learn more about where our food comes from.
Thank you Gale Woods! 🐷🐔

This month, Voyageur collaborated with the Lake Minnetonka chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a women’s service organization, to plant a new pollinator garden 🐝🌸. Members of the chapter’s conservation committee came out to design and plant a new garden while adding native perennials and pollinator-friendly plants along other areas of Voyageur’s campus. They donated and planted over 100 plants total, covering 23 different species and varieties.
Pollinator gardens provide essential food sources and habitat for the insects, birds, and animals on which our food system and ecosystems depend. They are an important tool in combating biodiversity loss, as many pollinator populations have dwindled in recent years. We are immensely grateful to the members of DAR for carrying out this important project, and for helping us in our commitment to conservation and land stewardship!

Last week marked the end of the first full year of Voyageur’s afterschool program. Our spring programming has been full of fun activities – cooking, gardening, disc golf, fishing, and painting to name a few. While we’re sad to see it go, we’re excited to kick things into gear for our jam-packed summer season!

Last week, the kids of our afterschool program presented their project for the Boys and Girls Club of the Twin Cities’ TLC Changemaker’s Challenge. Members of each club have been working on a youth advocacy project in their communities. They identified an issue among their peers and worked together to come up with a solution. Voyageur youth have spent the past weeks researching and creating a campaign to reduce bullying among their peers. We’re so proud of the hard work they’ve put into this project, and of their presentation!

As the days get a little longer and a little warmer, we’ve tapped some of our maple trees to make our very own Voyageur maple syrup. We will be making various maple treats in our afterschool program with the outcome!

As spring arrives, consider growing some of your own food! A great way to start is by growing an herb garden. Herbs have various culinary uses and are easy to grow in small spaces.
All you need to get started is a pot with a hole at the bottom for drainage, potting soil, and a couple of plants. You can either buy seeds or young plants at a nursery or propagate your own plants using herbs from the supermarket!
To propagate herbs, you can take a long sprig of the herb, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a glass with a small amount of water. Place the glass in a sunny window and wait for roots to develop. Once roots are established, you can plant directly into the soil, making sure to water regularly. To use your herbs, harvest from the top, making sure to leave plenty of leaves behind to let the plant keep growing. With regular pruning, your herbs will grow big and beautiful.
