At a time when so much of the world is becoming automated and algorithmic, we are taking a stand: Human-powered enjoyment of nature is a radical and necessary act. So is the work of caring for these places and for one another. And that is something that only humans can do.

We've all had one of those ideas... one that seems crazy, but it just can't let you go. For Annie DeAngelo and Victoria Rossin it was a self-support trip stand up paddleboarding the entire length of the Salmon River.

20+ days consecutive days of paddleboarding, from Stanley, Idaho, to Heller Bar, Washington. 398 scenic miles of whitewater, wildlife, and nights spent under the stars.

After getting married on the banks of the Salmon, Annie and Toria returned with SUPs to honeymoon their way from Stanley to the Snake.

Eddie & Caroline knew that their trip up the Columbia River, moving from Astoria, Oregon, to Lewiston, Idaho, wouldn't be easy. But with every paddle stroke, the secrets the salmon—their literal and figurative guides—use to navigate home became increasingly clear, the currents, whitecaps, and shallows creating a map to the river's surface and the depths below.

Eddie and Caroline journey up the Columbia River guided by its original navigators: salmon returning home from the sea.

After weeks of crossing glaciers, climbing peaks, and pulling more than 100 pounds across the Arctic, the greatest lesson of the expedition came from the gentlest part of the journey. The river.

In Part 3 of the Baffin Island Expedition, Heather reflects on how the journey's final days on the Kuugaaluk River became an invitation to slow down, listen to what the landscape was trying to teach them, and carry those lessons home.

"Those few days paddling the Kuugaaluk River were refreshing in many ways. It offered space, peace, and, as down as I was feeling, I couldn't escape the childlike need to play." ✨

As her Baffin Island expedition nears its end, Heather Smallpage comes full circle and reflects on the challenging yet cathartic experience.
