Rather than pursue the traditional summer internship or job, Reed College students Caroline Menton & Eddie Newsom came up with a better* idea --> Paddle from Astoria, OR, to Lewiston, ID, along the Columbia and Snake River, tracing the migration of the Snake River Summer Chinook Salmon.

"When we sat down and drew out our messy word cloud of things that taught us the most, we realized our best learning never came from cubicles or conference rooms. It came from the water."

With summer break approaching, Reed College seniors Caroline Menton and Eddie Newsom seek to better understand the Snake River summer Chinook salmon, kayaking upstream from Oregon to Idaho.

Growing up in Lapwai, Idaho, Devin Reuben lives only miles from the rivers that, not so long ago, gave shape to his ancestor’s lives. All spring and summer, cars and trucks laden with rafts and kayaks drive by on their way to float through the majestic canyons of the Snake and Salmon Rivers. Yet as a rez kid, these ancestral waters lay largely out of reach—until now.

"It’s maybe sappy to say that NFC changed our lives, but it sure feels that way."

With the return of North Fork Championship just around the corner, what better time to revisit Izzy Lidsky's piece on the legacy—and future—of Class V kayak races.

First Gore Fest then Feather Fest and now NFC, as more Class V races are canceled, Izzy Lidsky examines the fate of these beloved events.

“What I liked about rafting is, being on the river. Floating through the rapids, hearing that water. Getting out there. A lot of people like me, don’t get out there.” Devin Reuben // For Nez Perce teen Devin Reuen, learning the lines on the Snake and Salmon Rivers is about much more than a job—it’s an act of cultural reclamation. hitoláayca (Going Upriver) follows Devin as he trains to become the first certified Nimiipuu whitewater guide of his generation, forging a pathway back to his ancestral waters so others can follow. As Devin puts it: “It's one big step for us: not just me, all of us. We're slowly bringing our culture back.” //

You know the old saying, “You can take the raft guide off the river, but you can’t get the river out of the raft guide?”

Decades after hanging up her guide stick, rivers still form a central current through Patrica "Patso" Stow's life. Surfing and river boarding with her sons or kayaking with her husband and her “Posse,” time on the water brings playfulness and challenge to shape Patso’s many facets—mother, wife, paddler, mentor, friend.
