Good evening everyone, Sarah Scronce here, President of Field of Dreams Athletic Association.
I wanted to take a minute to share something, especially as we are kicking off another fall season.
First, I want to address something that was brought to our attention on our old page. We did communicate to a family that a refund would be mailed, actually a few, and it has taken longer than it should have. That is on us. As President, I take responsibility for that, and we will get it taken care of.
I completely understand the frustration. If I was told I was getting a refund and was still waiting, I would be frustrated too.
What is hard for me to read, though, is the suggestion that something “fishy” is going on with our association.
I can assure you, we aren’t in the fishing game. We’re in the business of getting kids on ball fields. To be honest, I wish everyone could see what goes on behind the scenes before assuming the worst.
Our season has literally just started. Up until the day before the season truly began, members of our board were working with two other amazing associations working hard to get kids to play. That is what we are trying to build here. Our entire board is made up of volunteers. They have jobs. They have families. They have kids of their own. They have things going on in their lives that nobody on Facebook knows anything about. Yet they still answer messages, organize teams, work on fields, coordinate schedules, find coaches, attend meetings, solve problems, build relationships in our community and do a hundred other things most people will never see. And they do it because they care.
Since this current board came together, we have worked our tails off to rebuild relationships and trust within our community. We have worked to give back, support other organizations, improve our ballpark and, most importantly, create opportunities for kids to play. Are we going to get everything right? No.
Sometimes, believe it or not, something is going to take longer than it should. Sometimes a message isn’t going to get answered as quickly as someone would like. Sometimes one of us is going to drop the ball. We are human. When that happens, we will own it. We will fix it and we will try to do better.
But as President, I am also going to stand up for the people who stand beside me and volunteer their time for this community. I am proud of this board, and I have their backs. Accountability and grace can exist at the same time.
I also want to clear up something that may be causing some confusion. This is our current and official page. There is an older Field of Dreams page that is still active and still has followers. We try to share our posts and information over to that page when we can, but it doesn’t always happen. If you are seeing this because it was shared to the old page, please come over and follow our current page so you don’t miss updates and information.
We have some amazing associations throughout Lincoln County, with volunteers at those parks working just as hard for kids. If we don’t have enough players for an age group and another association does, we want that child playing there. If another park is a better fit for a family, we want that child playing there. If we can work together with another association to get kids on a field, we will. At the end of the day, they aren’t our kids and their kids.
They are our community’s kids.
For families who choose another association, we may be sad to see you go, but there are no hard feelings. We hope your kids have an amazing season, make memories, build friendships and continue to love the game. That’s what youth sports are supposed to be about, and that’s bigger than any one ballpark.
Constructive criticism comes with leadership. I know that. When we fall short, we need to hear it. We are always willing to have a conversation, answer questions and take responsibility when something needs to be made right.
But I also want to be very clear about something as President. What I will not tolerate on this page is foul language, personal attacks or downright negativity toward our volunteers, board members, coaches, families or other associations. There is a difference between holding us accountable and tearing people down.
You absolutely do not have to agree with every decision we make. You can be frustrated. You can ask questions. You can tell us when you think we got something wrong. But it can be done respectfully.
I will always encourage open communication, and I will always listen when someone has a legitimate concern. At the same time, I have a responsibility to stand up for the people who volunteer for this organization and for the kind of community we are working so hard to build.
Before questioning someone’s character or intentions, I hope we remember there are real people on the other side of that screen. People giving up evenings, weekends and countless hours of their lives trying to make something better for our communities children. We aren’t going to get everything right. Please don’t mistake an imperfect group of volunteers for a group of people who don’t care. Because we care. A lot.
We will own our mistakes. We will try to make them right. We will give each other grace. And then we’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing…. showing up, working together, rebuilding relationships and doing everything we can to get kids on ball fields.
That’s the Field of Dreams I am proud to be President of, and that’s the Field of Dreams our board is working hard to build.
We want this page, this park and this association to reflect the community we’re trying to create, one where we can disagree, have hard conversations, make mistakes, fix them and still treat one another with respect.
It’s about the kids. It’s always been about the kids.
