Lake Crabtree County Park offers visitors opportunities for outdoor recreation. Located on a 215-acre site adjacent to a 520-acre flood control lake, the park hosts more than 16 miles of trails for its main activity. Other activities include group and individual picnicking, catch-and-release fishing, boating, and nature study. Happy Labor Day! Lake Crabtree County Park is open regular hours today. Its also the last day of boat rental season! Come out from 10 am - 6 pm (last boat goes out at 5 pm) to enjoy a free rental one last time this year! 🛶

Have you ever thought about a world without local waste management to take your trash? It would probably stink, literally! 🗑 The same goes for the natural world too, but instead of giant trash compactors there are vultures on the job!

Vultures use their extremely acidic stomachs to get rid of dangerous germs in carrion that can hurt humans and wildlife. They also recycle nutrients by breaking down organic waste and returning it to the soil.

The turkey vulture is well-known, but did you know we have another species of vulture in North Carolina? The black vulture is a very similar looking species but has an all-black head and less white on the wings compared to turkey vultures. Both species are highly social, but turkey vultures will independently scavenge for food furin the day. Black vultures, on the other hand, like to move as a group. Also, black vultures are more inclined to hang around people due to the easy to access food. Staff at Lake Crabtree knows this all too well, our local committee of black vultures are infamous for breaking open trash cans and ripping up trash bags to try and get an easy meal. 🍽

Even though they may not be the prettiest face to look at in the animal kingdom, vultures do amazing things for us and for the greater ecosystem ♻️🌱🦠

If you've been walking by the shoreline the past week, you may have heard a bunch of quiet munching sounds on some of the trees. That's the sound of dozens of Yellownecked Caterpillars snacking on leaves! 🐛

They feed in large colonies, carefully eating all the leaves on a branch. It may seem harmful to the tree, especially if there are multiple colonies on the same tree, but healthy trees are able to grow back the eaten foliage in the springtime just fine. The tree species in the picture is their preferred leaf to eat at Lake Crabtree County Park. Comment what type of tree you think this is!

‼️Boat Rental Update for Saturday, August 29th‼️
Because of intermittent storms surrounding Lake Crabtree this afternoon, expect possible closures for the rest of the day for boat rental. Anytime thunder is heard or lightning is seen, boat rental must be closed for 30 minutes without any additional thunder or lightening. Please be patient with staff today and call the boat house at 919-460-3398 for the most up to date information!

It’s the 50th anniversary of , and we want YOU to be part of the celebration by sharing your favorite memories in our parks and preserves! 📸💚

Former County Park employee Megan Beasley remembers: "Wake County parks have always held a special place in my heart. Growing up in southern Wake County, I remember class picnics at Crowder, a 5th grade field trip to Blue Jay Point, and countless hours at Harris Lake and Yates Mill. But my favorite of all is easily Lake Crabtree County Park. While in college at NCSU, majoring in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, I was lucky enough to stumble across a job opening in boat rentals and had the best summer learning how to paddle, row, pedal, and sail (back when they rented sunfish sailboats).. and also how to rescue guests who maybe weren’t so good at paddling or sailing. I loved it so much, I stuck around the next summer to become the boat rental manager while also completing my college internship. I learned more about the wildlife and plants that grew around the lake and even created a paddling trail along the lake so our guests in the water could learn more about the park’s natural features. Today, I’m lucky to get to bring my kids so they can also enjoy the beauty of Lake Crabtree while they fly kites, hike a trail, or play on the playground. And one day, before I know it, they’ll be big enough to paddle me around the lake."

It's that easy to participate in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census 🐛🦋🐝

This annual event helps scientist capture a snapshot of pollinator activity in communities across 6 states, including the types of pollinators and which flowers they visit! You don’t need to be an expert in insect identification, and anyone with 15 minutes of free time can participate!

Mud Day is a free event at Walnut Creek Wetland Park to celebrate the areas unique urban wetlands and all things mud! There will be hands-on activities, food trucks, live animals, and a giant mudslide.

As the days slowly get shorter and Summer comes to an end, our closing times will be getting earlier. Starting today, August 10th, the park will now be closing at 8:30 p.m. Remember, that the lake closes 30 minutes earlier (8 p.m.) 🌅
