As we continue to celebrate a century of serving our community, we take a moment today to celebrate Y member Virginia Faber! Virginia enjoys swimming at the Y and, in addition to participating in health and wellness programs, has been a regular supporter of the YMCA’s Send a Kid to Camp Campaign, helping to provide financial assistance to families in need each year.

“The Y is the most welcoming place and it’s meaningful to me that it provides opportunities to make sure that families can come here,” she said. “The Y has been a big part of my life. I took swim lessons at the Y, my children learned to swim at the Y, and it’s become a place where I have made so many friends.”

The Y would not be what it is today without our incredible members, and we are so thankful for Virginia and others like her for their continued support of Y initiatives!

Our next important stop on the Greater Joliet Area YMCA’s is the development of the C.W. Avery Family YMCA!

In 2001, the YMCA launched a capital campaign to construct a new facility in Plainfield. By December, the YMCA announced a leadership-level contribution from Judy and the late Clyde Avery and their family. The C.W. Avery Family YMCA was to be named in their honor.

In 2004, the YMCA hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Y. More than 200 supporters attended this celebration.

The C.W. Avery Family YMCA opened its doors in 2006, featuring an eight-lane lap pool, wellness center, gymnasium, and multi-purpose rooms.

We are currently seeking vendors for our Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday, October 24, from 10-11:30 a.m.! 🎃

For this event, we are looking for businesses to participate by hosting a trunk and handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters! This event is held at Morris Grade School.

As we continue our centennial series we are proud to highlight long-time Friends of Swimming volunteer and YMCA JETS Swim Team supporter Bob Baish. Whether cheering on his daughter at YMCA Nationals, or helping fundraise to meet the evolving needs of JETS swimmers, Bob has played a key role in strengthening the Y's presence in the world of youth aquatics. Bob said he is optimistic about the future of the Y because of staff leadership and the resources available to young swimmers.

"We have such beautiful facilities in Plainfield, Morris, and Shorewood, and the money that has been raised for the new facilities shows how receptive these communities have been to Y. The hope is young people follow in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents," he said.

Happy Friday from our Kid Zone friends!

Today, we’re taking a trip back to 1995 to look at where it all began. In November of 1995, the Plainfield Area YMCA was chartered as a new branch of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA. In partnership with Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, the YMCA’s before and after school Kid Zone program served students at Walker’s Grove and Crystal Lawns Elementary Schools.

Nearly 30 years later, our Kid Zone program is now serving more than 1,100 kids each school day across 8 school districts. Kid Zone continues to be an important part of the YMCA’s commitment to supporting our community!

As an industry leader in aquatic safety for more than 100 years, the Y is the perfect place to begin a career as a lifeguard or swim instructor. And, as we prepare for our busy fall season, we are excited to host an employment open house next week! Attendees will be able to participate in interviews and complete required swim testing in one session.

We’re taking it back to 1980 when seventeen-year-old David Sims, a member of the Joliet JETS YMCA Swim Team coached by Tim Hill, qualified for the Summer Olympics in the 1500-meter freestyle. Unfortunately, the United States’ boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games prevented David from competing on the World Stage.

We are also proud to share that last week Coach Hill was inducted into the American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Coach Hill, and thank you for the lasting impact you’ve made on generations of swimmers and the Joliet community!
