Member Highlight
Please congratulate, Zane Petras on being our Member Highlight for the month of September!

1.) Why did you decide to try Ridgeline?
I decided to try Crossfit Ridgeline after realizing that I missed the structure and community that I had in college athletics. Without it, I was neither staying as fit as I felt I could be, nor meeting new friends like I had hoped to when we moved to Morgantown. Having grown up going to Crossfit every Saturday morning with my parents, I knew it would be a good fit before I even started; I’m so glad to have been proven right!

2.) What is your favorite part about Ridgeline?
My favorite part about Crossfit Ridgeline is the sense of camaraderie that starts with each workout, but persists well beyond the gym.

3.) What are your hobbies outside of the gym?
Outside of the gym I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing/snowboarding, travelling, and pretty much anything else I can do with my wife, Grace.

4.) What kinds of improvements have you seen since joining CrossFit?
I have seen so much improvement in my Olympic weightlifting form since joining Crossfit (shout out to Emily for being such an amazing - and patient - coach). I also feel fitter and stronger overall!

5.) What would you say to someone that is nervous to try CrossFit?
I would tell someone nervous to try Crossfit that the hardest part is getting through the door the first time. Once you’re in, every workout is what you make of it (and all of the coaches are amazing at helping to personalize each one), and everyone you meet will support you at every step in your fitness journey, no matter what your goals are. If you’re not a member of Crossfit Ridgeline, you’re missing out!

Coach Highlight

MEET THE COACHES

Do you ever wondered who your coaches are outside of class? Look no further as we highlight a different coach every few months, so you get to know the Ridgeline coaching staff!

Please congratulate, Angelica Tabares on being our Coach Highlight for the month of August!

1.) What is your job outside of Ridgeline?
For the past 7 years, I have been involved in athletics business. I help with the day-to-day business operations, accounting and finance for sports teams, and support staff within college athletics

2.) What do you do when you’re not working out?
When I’m not at the gym, you can find me outside kicking a soccer ball. I like spending some time on the water, and I also enjoy a nice rainy day where I can just light candles, be unbothered and get cozy. More than likely I’m with my dog, Tira, and she’s chewing on her leash.

3.) How did you get into CrossFit?
I got into CrossFit through my mom. I was going on my 5th year of college soccer when she gifted me a gym membership and that was to help me get ready for my last season. And here I am nine years later.

4.) Give us 3 facts about you that we don’t know about you?
Some fun facts about me are that I am a 3rd sibling out of four. I have lived in 6 different states, and one time I mistakenly told Justin Bieber that he looked exactly like Justin Bieber.

Member Highlight
Please congratulate, Brian Jett on being our Member Highlight for the month of July!

1.) Why did you decide to try Ridgeline?
I decided to try Ridgeline because I was looking for something different. I was tired of the same old routine at Planet Fitness. Biceps and triceps one day, chest and back another day, legs on the third day, repeat.

2.) What is your favorite part about Ridgeline?
My favorite part about Ridgeline is both the competitive and supportive environment. Many of your classmates want to push themselves to be the first person to finish a workout, but they will respect and support you whether you are the first or last to cross the finish line. Everyone is on the same team, which makes the workouts fun (or at least suck less). And Coach Joe, we love Coach Joe.

3.) What are your hobbies outside of the gym?
Outside the gym I enjoy attending all of the WVU sporting events, traveling to new places (just got back from a European vacation where we visited Italy, Greece and several Greek islands, and Turkey), spending time with my girlfriend Kim and our families, playing golf, and last but not least my dog Arlo.

4.) What kinds of improvements have you seen since joining CrossFit?
I have seen many improvements since joining Ridgeline, but the two biggest improvements have been my cardio/endurance as well as a commitment to my routine (I know, not your typical answer). Coach Joe likes to say “there are three you can count on in life: death, taxes, and Brian Jett at 7:00 am.”

5.) What would you say to someone that is nervous to try CrossFit?
For anyone nervous about trying Crossfit, I would say that the majority of participants are not former collegiate or professional athletes (although we do have some of those). Most of us are just regular guys or girls showing up and pushing ourselves to be a little bit better each day.

Member Highlight
Please congratulate, on being our Member Highlight for the month of June!

1.) Why did you decide to try Ridgeline?
My older sister and I started CrossFit together almost 10 years ago, and I quickly grew to love the community and challenge that came with it. During residency, I moved away and took a break from CrossFit for a couple of years. When I moved back for work, I wanted to get back into it. Ridgeline was close to my job and felt like the perfect place for a fresh start, so I decided to give it a try.

2.) What is your favorite part about Ridgeline?
My favorite part about Ridgeline is definitely the people. I was a little nervous at first since I didn’t know many people, but that feeling didn’t last long. Everyone has been so welcoming, encouraging, and supportive. It’s clear that people genuinely want to see each other succeed, and that sense of community is what makes me look forward to coming to the gym every day. I’m also really thankful for the friendships and connections I’ve made since joining Ridgeline.

3.) What are your hobbies outside of the gym?
Outside of the gym, I love traveling to new places and finding the best food and coffee wherever I go. Hiking is always a bonus too, especially if there’s a beautiful view at the end. I also really enjoy baking, and right now my current fixation is sourdough everything. More than anything, I love spending time with my family. I’m very close with my two sisters — I live with one of them — and I love being an aunt to my two nephews.

4.) What kinds of improvements have you seen since joining CrossFit?
Since joining CrossFit, I’ve definitely seen improvements in my strength and endurance. I’ve also enjoyed challenging myself with new skills, like working toward muscle ups and hopefully one day being able to do a handstand walk. But more than anything, the biggest improvement has been in my confidence. It’s been really rewarding to see growth both inside and outside of the gym.

Please congratulate, Aleks Stefaniak on being our Member Highlight for the month of May!

1.) Why did you decide to try Ridgeline?
I was at a point in life where I was looking to make some positive changes to my mental and physical health. At the time, I lived down the street from Ridgeline and passed by it everyday on my way to work, so one day I stopped in to check it out. I had never done CrossFit so it was all new to me.

2.) What is your favorite part about Ridgeline?
The thing that got me hooked over 10 years ago was that Ridgeline was more than a gym. It was a community of people, everyone was really encouraging and helpful in learning proper techniques. The people are what makes Ridgeline better and better every day.

3.) What are your hobbies outside of the gym?
My wife and I love to cook together. We are big National Park junkies so we are always looking for an opportunity to visit a new place and hike a trail. We enjoy traveling too, anyplace near or far. I dabble in photography so my camera comes with me anyplace we go. It’s a continuous learning process, so I like the challenge of getting a great photo.

4.) What kinds of improvements have you seen since joining CrossFit?
Early on, I saw a lot of improvement in strength and endurance. As the years have gone by, I find myself chasing PRs less and focusing more on technique and staying healthy so I can workout again the next day. Big shout out to the Front Porch!

5.) What would you say to someone that is nervous to try CrossFit?
It can be intimidating coming into a gym for the first time, but just remember, everyone there had a first day, too. Focus on proper technique and staying healthy. The PRs will come with time.

Coach Highlight

MEET THE COACHES

Do you ever wondered who your coaches are outside of class? Look no further as we highlight a different coach every few months, so you get to know the Ridgeline coaching staff!

Please congratulate, Jian Pethtel on being our Coach Highlight for the month of April!

1) What is your job outside of Ridgeline?

I’m a real estate agent with Howard Hanna.

2) What do you do when you’re not working out?

When I’m not in the gym, I’m usually still doing something active. Over the past year, I’ve gotten into running. I ran the Pittsburgh Half Marathon last year and completed the Disney Full Marathon this past January.
Outside of that, I love to hike, travel, read a good book, crochet, and paint pottery. I like to joke that I’m in my “grandma era,” but I fully embrace it. Most importantly, I love spending time with my husband, Eric, my friends, and our sweet pup, Maple.

3) How did you get into CrossFit?

I got into CrossFit after deciding not to pursue collegiate soccer. I’ve always been competitive, so I knew I needed something to fill that space. A friend from my hometown mentioned CrossFit Ridgeline while I was attending WVU, so I decided to check it out. I walked through the front door and I haven’t looked back. Since joining CrossFit I received my CrossFit Level 1 and began coaching in 2018. In 2023, I continued my education and received my CrossFit Level 2 certification.

4) Give us 3 facts about you that we don’t know about you?

1.) I have danced on broadway
2.) I have my advance open water scuba certification
3.) my guilty pleasure is reality tv

Member Highlight
Please congratulate, Kalyn Noechel on being our Member Highlight for the month of February!

1.) Why did you decide to try Ridgeline?
I had been doing CrossFit at a gym in Fairmont since 2013 but the class I usually went to was moved to a different time and there weren’t any other classes that worked with my schedule. I started looking for a new gym closer to my work. I tried Ridgeline first and never looked back.

2.) What is your favorite part about Ridgeline?
The abundance of class times! No matter what I have going on, there is always a class I can make work. And I can’t leave out the 6AM crew who make having to wake up so early worth it. I really found my people when I switched to mornings.

3.) What are your hobbies outside of the gym?
Sleeping in! (IYKYK...) Joking aside, I dabble in some very amateur photography and I love to read. I also love to sit outside with coffee or wine. I’ll never turn down a trip to a winery!

4.) What kinds of improvements have you seen since joining CrossFit?
Definitely strength. I started with barely being able to bench press the bar and to this day, I’m the strongest I’ve ever been and still getting stronger. My cardio ability has also vastly improved since starting at Ridgeline — though you would never know by watching me in class or checking my scores.

5.) What would you say to someone that is nervous to try CrossFit?
Maybe it’s not for you and that’s OK - you have to find what works for you. But you never know unless you try. Though some advice if you do try, let yourself ease into it, listen to the coaches, and learn to do the movements correctly. Being obnoxiously sore (or worse, hurt) isn’t going to make you love it. Oh, and never do more than 50 wall balls in a WOD until you’re hooked. Just trust me.
