Morenci Bulldogs had a tough game today. But the heart of this team shined through. Game going into extra innings and sealed the deal with Jonas Castillo stealing 2nd and 3rd base with Blake Moran’s walk off single.
Score: 6-5 Dogs

The Morenci varsity baseball team entered the 2025 season with excitement and high expectations after a one-win season just a year ago.

Our district game didn’t go the way we hoped. BD came out fast with a five-run first inning, followed by runs in the third and a big fourth to put the game out of reach. But the effort and fight from our team never faded.

Evan Gould drove in both of our runs, and we picked up hits from Drew Joughin, Zachary Stevens, and Wyatt Stevens. Blake Moran started on the mound and competed through a tough outing. Despite the challenges, our players stayed composed, competed hard, and kept showing what it means to be part of this program.

This season was about more than the final score, it was about growth, grit, and building a team that plays for each other. And in that, we succeeded.

Proud to coach this group. Proud of the fight. Proud of the journey

Bulldogs Sweep Athens Behind Big Bats and Strong Pitching

The Morenci Varsity Baseball team traveled to Athens Tuesday and came home with a doubleheader sweep, winning Game 1 9–5 and dominating Game 2 19–2.

In Game 1, Drew Joughin led the way with a 3-hit day, while Evan Gould drove in 3 runs and Blake Moran, Wyatt Stevens, and Collin Blaker each added big hits. On the mound, Moran, Joughin, and Stevens combined to limit Athens to just five runs on three hits, striking out seven total.

Game 2 saw the offense explode for 19 runs on 12 hits and 13 walks. Talan Kruse had a perfect 3-for-3 game with 3 RBIs, while Zachary Stevens drove in three and Jonas Castillo tossed three shutout innings for the win. Stevens, Trent, Moran, and Gould each had multi-hit games, and the Bulldogs stole 15 bases in an all-around team effort.

Bulldogs Battle at Home Against Summerfield

The Varsity Bulldogs hosted a tough Summerfield squad on Friday and dropped both ends of the doubleheader, falling 14–1 and 11–1.

Despite the results, several Bulldogs stepped up. In Game 1, Zachary Stevens drove in the team’s only run, while Talan Kruse added a hit and two stolen bases. Wyatt Stevens pitched 4.2 innings in relief, striking out four.

In Game 2, the Bulldogs collected nine hits, including a run-scoring double by Evan Gould. Drew Joughin, Zachary Stevens, and Wyatt Stevens each had two hits, and Jonas Castillo struck out four in his start.

The team looks to regroup and respond as they travel to Athens on Tuesday.
