So incredibly proud of this group. The dedication, late evening practices, and heart they put in all season long made this league title a reality - an undefeated season, proud to be a coach year two with a league title I’m so happy for these kids💪🏾❤️🥺🥺⚽️⚪️⚫️

Every coach preaches 1v1.

Walk into almost any academy session and you'll see "1v1 drills" being run. Two lines of players facing each other. Cones for the target. The attacker tries a stepover. The defender plays defence the way the coach told them to play defence. The kid scores. The kid doesn't score. Next pair.

That isn't 1v1 development. That's choreography.

Real 1v1 work doesn't start with the move. It starts with the moment. The defender's stance, weight, foot position, the space behind them, what's available for the pass, where the next defender is. The move is the answer to a question the player has to ask first.

Most academy "1v1 sessions" never teach the question.

I watched a 14-year-old execute a perfect stepover in a Tuesday cone drill, then try the same stepover four days later in a game against a defender she'd already beaten twice with a simple cut inside. The drill rewarded the move. The game rewarded the read. She'd been trained to do the wrong thing brilliantly.

This is where Rachel Daly is different. Not because her technique is sharper than the rest. It's because by the time she's at the defender, she's already made three decisions. Where the defender is leaning. What the goalkeeper's position rewards. What the next pass would have been if the move hadn't been available. She picks the answer, then executes it. The move is the last thing she chose, not the first.

That work is harder to coach than a move. You can't write it on a whiteboard. You can't film it for Instagram. You can't hand it to a coach who's been on a four-day course. It takes years of representative practice against real defenders, in real space, with real consequences, and a coach who debriefs the read, not the result.

I know this because I've spent two decades coaching almost nothing else.

So when an academy says "we're focused on 1v1 development," I want to know. 1v1 against what? With what pressure? Measured how?

If the answer is "we run a 1v1 drill on Tuesday," that isn't 1v1 development. That's the drill.

Coaches, DOCs, academy leads. What does real 1v1 development look like at your club? And I mean specifically, not in principle.
