It’s hot. The water is low. And that fish you just landed needs a little extra help getting back.
We head out early for a reason — and part of that is about caring what we’re fishing for.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: trout thrive in water temps between 45–60°, with the sweet spot right around 55–60°. Once temps hit 65°, they’re already stressed. At 68°, it can be fatal, even with a perfect release. Low water only makes it worse, stripping oxygen and leaving fish with nothing to recover on.
So the release matters more than ever. Wet your hands before you touch them! Hold them in the current, facing upstream. Let them tell you when they’re ready. Don’t let go until that tail kicks and they mean it.
A few things we’re doing right now to keep fish healthy this time of year:
→ Off the water before the heat of the day peaks
→ On the water early when temps and flows are in our favor
→ Heavier tippet so fights stay short
→ Wet your hands — always — before handling
→ Keep fish wet! SKIP the photo if conditions are tough
→ Extended revival time, always
These fish are worth more than one catch. Protect your fishery. This is what good stewardship looks like — pass it on!!
