KNEES & FEET HURT? Today I did a posture evaluation on a gentleman who came to see me because his knees hurt. Looking at his posture, I discovered that he hyper-extends (extends beyond straight) both knees and rolls inward on his feet, dropping his arches so his feet flatten. Sound familiar?
We discovered that he locks his knees backwards and shifts his hips forward to stabilize himself because his core muscles are not activated and used. He was never taught how to find those deep core muscles and to use them to walk or stand.
We are correcting this by getting him to soften his knees when standing so he doesn’t lock his knees backwards’ or hyper-extend them. We are building his core strength through the Pilates basics to stabilize his pelvis and give him the power to maintain an upright posture. We are also strengthening the arches of his feet.
Dropped arches can create various problems: lower back pain, knee pain, hip pain and foot pain.
Here is a simple exercise to do to build up your arches:
Place a hand towel flat on the floor. Standing or sitting, grab one end of the towel with your toes and pull it up and under your foot using your toes and the arch of your foot. ‘Walk’ the whole towel under your foot, one ‘grab’ at a time. Then do the other foot. Then repeat both feet. Do this exercise 2x per day. It will greatly strengthen your feet!
Your body is designed to walk from heel to toe: heel first, then rolling slightly towards the outside, and then centered across the ball of your foot. Lastly, you push off with your toes driving the body forward as you repeat the same process on your other foot.
When your arches are ‘dropped’ you roll to the inside of your foot putting stress on the knee joint. No bueno! Your knee is the ‘stabilizer’ between your ankle and hip. You want it to be able to do its job!
Through Pilates, you align the structure of your skeletal frame, find and develop core connection, realign and properly develop your deep supporting muscles around each joint and build the strength, flexibility and muscular balance to move efficiently and pain free.

Saturday - Pilates Mat Class in Montrose. $10 First Class. IN THE BEGINNING - PILATES STARTED ON THE MAT -- Do not underestimate the power of the Pilates mat series. This is where it all started in the 1920s. This original exercise series form the foundation of the Pilates Method. With each exercise you learn to move from the center or deep core of your body, leading with your breath and focusing on core stability, spine mobility and lengthening of the muscles with control.
Our highly experienced teacher skillfully adds specific stretches, posture and mobility movements to build you up to the full range of exercise. The exercises can be challenging, but can be adapted for any fitness or age level. The magic circle (pilates ring), therapy-bands (stretchy bands) and balls are used to assist you to find and use your own body weight as resistance. That is the beauty of this class.
There are thirty-four original exercises and endless variations which make for wide variety in classes. You will feel fully stretched, strengthened and toned at the end of the 55-minute class. To get a strong dose of Joseph Pilates’ philosophy about health, exercise and breathing and why he created this mind-body method you can find his book: Return to Life through Contrology (control-ogy or the study of control).
I highly recommend it! The book contains photos of the original exercises demonstrated by the man himself at 60 years old.

WHY IS BREATHING IMPORTANT DURING EXERCISE?
Breathing helps you control your attention and stay fully present during the movement. Breathing ‘sets up’ the exercise; it is an important control factor between you and your body. You use breathing to help engage your deep core muscles. When breathing properly, it carries you through the motion from beginning to end.
I liken breathing to music. Music is the interface between a dancer and the choreography – they ‘meet’ through the music. Breathing is your ‘music’ for your movement. Movement has everything to do with life. You are alive, you move. You can move haphazardly. Or you can move with grace, fluidity, and power. I choose the grace, fluidity and power! Which do you choose?

A Recent Success:
I'm 71 years old! I lost 20 pounds in three months, three inches off my waist. Eating better. More conscious of my body posture. I was so tired all the time and stiff. Now I feel like 40!
This is a healing place. The connection with the trainers is the best part for me. I also appreciate learning body mechanics.

27 Year Instructor… Teacher Spotlight Linda Igarashi
Linda was trained and certified in Pilates by Marie-Jose Blom at Long Beach Dance Conditioning, in 1999. She is also a certified CoreAlign instructor as well as having extensive experience working in physical therapy and chiropractic clinics with Pilates.
Her movement background includes a B.A. degree in dance and choreography from UCLA. As a performer, her credits range from concert modern dance to Broadway musicals such as Miss Saigon (original Canadian company), Beauty and the Beast (original Los Angeles company), the Broadway revival tour of The King and I and Sh**un, the Musical, on Broadway.
