Last night I got to referee a very competitive and intense county rivalry game. It was tied until 15 seconds to to in the game. Both teams played hard and it was intense. During the game, the players were extremely respectful to each other. We had fouls but nothing that rose to a level of caution. No real dissent. We had a lot of conversations and they were okay with it. In the second half we had a number of players who went down with cramps and each time the closest players helped stretch them out, regardless of which team they were on. When a foul was committed and a player went down, they were helped up by the closest player, regardless of which team. They played with intensity and respect, for each other and for our crew. In got worried once in preparation for a corner kick as two players looked like they were pushing each other before the kick and I whistled and approached them. They both saw me and smiled and gave each other a hug, then got back to positioning against each other. They played with a joy, intensity and respect. They exhibited all the qualities that should make the parents and school administrators proud. I was very grateful for the opportunity to officiate the game.
