💡 TOPIC OF THE DAY: 12-Gauge vs. 14-Gauge Strut Channel 💡
From the outside, a stick of standard 1-5/8" strut looks just like any other. But the thickness of the steel makes a massive difference in load capacity.
The Breakdown:
12-Gauge (Heavy Duty): This is the industrial standard (like the classic P1000). The steel wall thickness is roughly 0.105 inches. It’s built for heavy pipe runs, conduit banks, HVAC units, and heavy structural framing.
14-Gauge (Light Duty): The steel is thinner (around 0.075 inches). It’s lighter, easier to cut, cheaper, and perfectly fine for light-duty electrical, shelving, or basic ceiling grids.
⚠️ The Danger Zone: A 10-foot span of 12-gauge strut can handle significantly more weight before deflecting (bending) compared to 14-gauge. If you’ve got a heavy load or a long span, always check your engineering specs—never assume the cheaper, lighter stick can do the same job.
