What an incredible seminar with Vinni Magalhães!

This weekend was all about learning from one of the best to ever step on the mats. Vinni brought a wealth of knowledge, sharing high-level techniques, concepts, and details that will help our students elevate their Jiu-Jitsu for years to come.

What impressed me most was not only his accomplishments in the sport but his willingness to teach, answer questions, and make sure everyone walked away with a deeper understanding of grappling.

Thank you, my brother, for taking the time to come to Art of Entanglement and share your knowledge with our team. We are grateful for your friendship, your professionalism, and everything you do for the Jiu-Jitsu community.

Thank you as well for bringing your family and spending the weekend with our AOE family. It was an honor to host you all.

What an incredible day at our 1st No-Gi Open! 🔥

We were honored to welcome athletes, coaches, families, and academies from across the region, including teams from Monterey, San Jose, Palo Alto, and surrounding areas. The energy on the mats was amazing, the sportsmanship was outstanding, and the atmosphere truly showcased what Jiu Jitsu is all about.

The kids had an absolute blast competing, learning, and making new friendships. Parents, friends, and supporters helped create an unforgettable environment that felt more like a celebration of our community than a tournament.

From the incredible food and açaí to the exciting matches throughout the day, every moment reflected the growth of our sport and the strength of our local grappling community.

To make the day even more special, we finished with an amazing seminar led by a true Jiu Jitsu legend, sharing knowledge and inspiration with the next generation of athletes.

Thank you to every academy, competitor, parent, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter who made this event possible. This was more than a tournament—it was a great day for Jiu Jitsu, a great day for our community, and the beginning of something special.

Art of Entanglement is bringing a real competition experience to the mats. No-Gi, high pace, submission-focused, and built for athletes that want to test themselves.

This is where reputations are built.

🥋 Beginner Division (White Belts Only)

* -80kg / +80kg
* 8-man brackets
* 💰 $150 to the winner

🥋 Intermediate Division (Blue & Above)

* -80kg / +80kg
* 8-man brackets
* 💰 $250 to the winner

🔥 Expert Division (Semi-Pro & Pro)

* Mixed weight division
* ⚖️ 10+ lb difference = heavier athlete starts with -1 point
* 💰 $350 cash to the winner

DEASHI HARAI 🦶💨

Timing beats strength. Always.

Deashi Harai is one of the cleanest sweeps you can hit in No-Gi — but only if you understand kuzushi (off-balancing) and movement. You’re not kicking the leg… you’re catching it mid-step when there’s no weight on it.

✔️ Control the upper body (collar tie / wrist / inside tie)
✔️ Create movement — don’t force it
✔️ Sweep as the foot becomes light
✔️ Stay relaxed… speed comes from timing, not power

In No-Gi, this technique is money when your opponent is constantly circling or stepping heavy. Make them move… then take the floor from under them.

Yesterday’s Open Mat was something special 🔥

The vibe was absolutely amazing — people came through from everywhere and you could feel the energy on the mats from the moment we started. Non-stop rolls, great rounds, and nothing but respect all around 🤝

The stretching was on point too — everybody getting loose and ready before getting after it 💪

Everyone had a great time, the food was on point 🌮 and the açaí was 🔥 as always. That’s what it’s about — training hard and enjoying it with good people.

Unfortunately for the group… some of you dipped out early 😅 you missed some of the best rounds at the end!!

Much love to everyone who showed up and made it what it was. We’re definitely running this back soon 👊
