Free flow is one of my favorite physical practices. The goal is to keep moving without thought or judgement.

My movement practice consists of Jiu Jitsu, Yoga and Gymnastics based movements, but you can choose whatever modality you like (there’s a lot out there).

Learning a number of individual movements will make it easier to free flow with a purpose.

This De La Riva wrestle up is a good example of how we can utilize the 90/90 stand up.

When practicing this movement or partner technique, remember to maintain good seated guard posture keeping your shoulders in front of your hips as you sit up.

Use the solo drill as a warm up before training or home exercise while visualizing how it applies with a partner.

Save and share with a partner you want to drill this with.

Here are a few poses from this morning’s 90 minute yin yoga practice. Give them a try when you have time.

1) Child’s pose
2) Dragon
3) Sleeping Swan
4) Half Butterfly
5) Half Saddle
6) Fire Log

3 principles to keep in mind:

1) Find your Edge: This is the wall of resistance that keeps you from going any further. Aim for about 40% of your limit.

2) Find Stillness: Once you find your edge, embrace stillness. Try to avoid fidgeting, etc.

3) Let Time Flow: Aim for 3-5 minutes for each pose.

Use this Flo as a way to warm your body before training and/or as a home movement practice.

Allow your breath to guide you through each movement.

Flo:
Forward shoulder roll (R) > combat base get up (R) > backward should roll (R) > saddle > repeat on the left side > continue alternating sides.

Save and practice these solo drills to improve your mobility for Jiu Jitsu.

Each movement is a fundamental hip up exercise from seated guard. Focus on body control on the way up and more importantly on the way down.

1) Leg extended closed guard hip up
2) Triangle hip up
3) Single leg x hip up
