Q: Are there any real life movements where humans put all of their weight on their heels?

A: No

One of the many reasons perfectly healthy people have pain is because they are using improper movement.

A squat with your weight in your heels is a great example of what you shouldn't be doing.

Our bodies were designed to be dynamic and to move. Weighted heels make us move improperly by changing our center of gravity and throwing us off balance.

Out of balance we compensate by moving in ways our body wasn't designed to move...

Now, I know there are a ton of movement nerds out there who have studied the body in text books...

But for the past 25 years I've been working with clients day in and day out in my training facility.

I've been helping people learn proper, refined movement that helps them correct structural and muscular issues so they can get out of pain.

Most people think happiness is the key to a good life but without movement there are limits that keep you from participating in life and experiencing joy.

• You want to be able to keep up with your kids or grandkids
• Make it through a family holiday without feeling exhausted
• Keep up with your garden
• Not have to slow down before your time

The key to doing these things is to make sure that your body is moving in a sustainable way. This means addressing that underlying back or hip pain that goes from something small to something large (like surgery).

Why is it so difficult to find solutions to chronic pain?

The reason is because pain is complex.

When I meet people who have given up hope or been in pain for years here are the top three things I assess:

1. What is your relationship to your body?
Do you feel safe within it?
How does your nervous system operate?
Do you have awareness of how your nervous system operates in movement?

2. Are you using PROPER MOVEMENT?

Many people think: "I've been walking since I was a child, how could I move incorrectly?"

The truth is that our structural bodies were designed to move in a very specific way but rarely do we move them properly. When you correct the movement the pain pattern can start to unravel.

3. What is your range of motion?

The longer we nurse an injury or move without proper movement the more constricted our movement and bodies become. Chronic pain is a result of the limits of those constrictions.

CHRONIC PAIN CAN BE PREVENTED WITH PROPER MOVEMENT

Proper movement will help pain that is:
• Fixed and stabbing
• Low level and burning
• Acute and fast acting

We can reduce inflammation through diet change and medication...
We can even strengthen muscles until the cows come home....

BUT if we are not moving properly
We are still creating PAIN PATTERNS

If the body says "I don't want to move like that" and we don't change it, it will swell, flair up, and compensate.

When we correct the core problem (incorrect movement), we can eliminate the pain patterns altogether.

Here's a hard FACT:

The less you use your body CORRECTLY the more PAIN patterns show up...

The truth is that no one taught us how to move because there is an assumption that humans will instinctively know PROPER movement

Unfortunately that's not true:

It's not true for a regular person
And it's not true for Olympic level athletes

In my life I've spent over 40,000 hours of my life OBSERVING and CORRECTING movement and that has lead me to the conclusion that:

If you're walking around with back pain today I can guarantee that there is a part of your body that isn't working the way that it...SHOULD

Incorrect movement is the reason:

You can go on pain meds and still have pain

You can go to PT and still have pain

You can have corrective surgery and still live with pain

Have you ever had a doctor look you straight in the eye and tell you you should be better even though you’ve just told them you're in pain?

This is a failure of the medical system to claim it’s limits.

But instead of taking ownership Doctors will turn it on their patients and leave them without options….

When it comes to back pain I hear the same thing every single time:
I went to the doctor and they gave me muscle relaxers

A few weeks later things didn’t change so they sent me for an X-Ray and PT

A few months later I was in more pain so they ordered an MRI

Next I was told there was nothing wrong….

Well why in the world am I in agony then?

Meanwhile, the doctor and PT never examined anything around my pain, just the specific pain.

It's maddening to know that people are needlessly suffering.
