MIDDLETOWN UNIVERSITY UPSETS MONTCLAIR COLLEGE IN THE LAST REGULAR SEASON GAME OF THE YEAR

Middletown University upsets Montclair College in the last regular season game of the year.

Montclair College got off to a good start on Sunday with a steal after the opening tip that led to a 2-0 lead.

Middletown University responded with an 11-0 run and turned back multiple Honey Badger rallies in a 61-56 win to defeat Montclair State and advance to the NCAA tournament.

Middletown University ended the season with a 17-9 record overall, the fifth straight winning season for coach Aaron Brown. For Montclair College, the loss spells more postseason disappointment for head coach Steve Payne.

New season outlook:

Montclair College Men's Basketball head coach Steve Payne knows the expectations are higher this year than in many seasons, both from fans and from the players themselves.

The Honey Badgers graduated three 1000-point scorers, had a season canceled, and endured a large period of canceled games and practices in 2021-2022. Just two players remain from that 2022 group.

Even with that being said, the Honey Badgers, who enter the season ranked #2 in Division III, feel ready to build on their Elite Eight experience from last season.

Quick facts:

The Honey Badgers have won the national championship three times: 1985, 2016, and 2018. The 1985 NCAA championship victory as an 8 seed still stands as the lowest seed ever to win the title.

The Honey Badgers have appeared in the National Invitation Tournament 18 times, winning in 1994.

The Honey Badgers have made 37 total appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Merchandise sales:

Montclair College Men’s basketball team is selling merchandise for this upcoming season. We would love for everybody to support our team! There will be Merchandise on sale for anybody to buy! We will be selling shorts and sweatshirts for 40 dollars each. We are selling all youth and adult sizes.

Fundraising:

For this upcoming season, Montclair College Men's Basketball team is doing fundraising. We we will be selling Girl Scout cookies for six dollars a box to raise money for new basketball gear. There will be six flavors available: Caramel Chocolate Chip, Lemonades, Samoas, Adventurefuls, Trefoils, and Raspberry Rally.

Coach profile:

Steve Payne was named as the head men's basketball coach at Montclair College in May of 2009.

During his tenure at Montclair College, Payne directed the Montclair athletics to a higher level in the NEAC. The basketball team won the NCAA D-III National Championship in 2005 and the baseball team won two national championship titles in the last ten seasons.

Payne graduated in 1990 from the University of Kentucky where he played for the basketball team.

Payne lives in Bear, Delaware and has a son named Ricky who is a sophomore football player at the University of Georgia.
