Stop number two on our Thanksgiving trip took us to Lubbock, Texas to hunt with . It was about a 10-hour drive from our hometown and 4 hours from JJ’s place. was able to join us for this leg of the trip, and even though she and Trinity live 5 hours apart, they’ve become really close.
Hunt one had us set up in a flat with about 4 inches of water, running A-frames. Thanks to all the rain the day before, it was a muddy mess—but still nothing like back home.
At shooting light, it felt like you couldn’t look in any direction without seeing thousands of sandhills. Picking a group to shoot was tough with that many birds around, but a single committed to the decoys and Trinity smoked it. Not long after, another single came in on the right and Charleigh gave it a barrel full with her .410—hit it, but not hard enough. I backed her up with the 28ga and knocked another species off the list.
We chipped away and ended up with a solid pile of sandhill. The land out there is unreal and was such a cool experience for someone who’s never been there before
