MEAT CHICKENS

This all began when a friend of mine started raising meat birds a few years back and when I asked him how much they were he said he sells them right at $5/pound for his birds. If you’re life me, you think that’s a pretty high price to pay for chicken. That puts each chicken costing $20-25. I wanted to experiment for myself.

Our meat chickens are officially 2 months old.. these have been the most challenging and costly animal I’ve raised yet.. I have spent more on these birds in 2 months than I did on feeding the hogs for 10 months… it is recommended to feed these chickens 1/4-1/2 pound per day, per chicken. That’s right at 12 pounds of food a day for the 25 we have. They are equally as nasty as the pigs were.. lol.

If my math is correct, with these 8 week old chickens I have right at $15 per bird in them and have a week left to feed them. I’m renting a chicken plucker to process them all next weekend and estimate my total cost will be around $17.50 per bird. That is with me processing them.

It has been work. Every morning and evening for the last 8 weeks we’ve fed and watered them. They drink almost 5 gallons of water a day and they’ll eat as much food as you put in there. I have been moving their chicken tractor every 2/3 days to keep the ground clean.

My conclusion, if you want quality poultry, but it. Haha. Don’t waste your time “saving money” haha. I didn’t save a dime although I have enjoyed the journey. It is nice knowing where your food comes from.

Just this year we managed to put up 4 deer, over 500 pounds of pork and, Lord willing, next weekend we will put up 25 meat chickens.

It is beautiful to labor for your food. The Lord has taught me a lot through all the work.

We would like to thank all of our valued customers over the years. As of now, we are not accepting anymore orders. God has given is a new opportunity to serve him and we want to be as committed as possible to that!

Thinking back to the past weekend’s hog hunt! This was our 7th year to do it. It’s a great time every year. There are a few of us who’ve never missed a year, some of us who’ve had life crisis’s along the way and missed a year, and one who is no longer with us. Thankful for a great weekend with friends. It’s easily my favorite hunt each year!
