The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), through its Ballistic Research Facility, conducted an evaluation of the M18 (a P320 variant) which found that the handgun can discharge without a trigger pull under certain conditions, highlighting serious safety concerns. This evaluation contributed to other agencies’ decisions regarding the platform.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has officially banned the SIG P320 for carry by its agents and is transitioning to other fi****ms due to these safety concerns and the potential for uncommanded discharges.
The U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command has issued a memorandum, effective July 21, 2025, ordering an “Immediate Pause of M18 Modular Handgun System (MHS) Operations” for all personnel within the command. This pause is due to a recent incident at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in which an Airman was killed and will remain in place until investigations are complete, with personnel being armed with M4 rifles in place of the M18.
The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC), which trains certified peace officers, has permanently banned recruits from using the SIG Sauer P320 in training and on its campuses following an incident where a recruit’s P320 allegedly discharged without the trigger being pulled, injuring instructors and recruits.
The Oregon Department of Public Safety and Training (Oregon Police Academy) has also announced it will no longer allow recruits to carry the SIG Sauer P320, citing an “abundance of caution” due to documented concerns about the firearm’s potential for uncommanded discharges.
Tactical Defense Institute (TDI) has implemented a policy banning the use of all SIG P320 pistols in their classes due to safety concerns related to uncommanded discharges.
Cougar Mountain Solutions has implemented a policy prohibiting the use of all SIG P320 pistols in their classes due to safety concerns related to uncommanded discharges.
