STORY TIME!!
A REAL EXPERIENCE FOR REAL HUNTERS

As we grow older we all know that one day we will hunt our last hunt. We never know when that day will come but the memories will hopefully stick with us until our final day.
When Buzz Ramsey and Kim Hunter (fitting name)
Joined us in Oregon it struck me. I had been reading Buzz Ramsey fishing articles and watching him on tv since i was in high school. And now here he was in my hunting camp with his great friend Kim.
These guys are tremendous people. A pleasure to be around filled with life and great stories. However it was apparent that age was creeping in and getting around rugged elk country was a challenge.
This was especially the case for Kim. Despite the difficulties Kim was determined and an elk hunter at heart. He had been there and done that and was not about to give up without giving it 100%.
After Buzz had harvested his bull the focus was all about kim.
Guides Anthony Smith and Bailey Barton made sure that kim didn’t have to carry anything extra and kept the hiking to a minimum. I combed the mountains looking for any elk that may be within grasp for Kim.
With pure determination and zero quit in any of us we managed to get it done the eve before the last day.
Unfortunately it was a questionable shot and we had to wait for a few hours to go back for the potential recovery.
As a very seasoned guide with 30 years experience two things came to mind. #1 was - we cannot ask Kim to go out in the middle of the night wandering around looking for an elk. He had already been pushing himself and was becoming pretty weak.
#2 - this could be his last elk hunt. We have got to recover this animal.
As Bailey, Anthony and i got to the last known location of the elk, it didn’t take long to find it.
We were beyond excited.
We quickly skinned out the animal and salvaged all the meat.
We loaded our packs with quarters and the guides asked “who’s packing the head”?
The answer was simple- NOBODY! What? They asked. My response was simple. This could be Kims last elk hunt. If we pack out the head he has nothing but memories unless they fade away. And then he has nothing. We are bringing Kim and Buzz back in the morning to take pictures and share this moment.
And if Kim cant make it then we go back for the head.
Needless to say Kim and Buzz were grateful for that. And as a guide and outfitter i was grateful that they could share that moment as friends. More importantly on what may have been Kims last elk hunt. Cheers! To a great time with great people.
