Carolina Isshinryu Academy Monroe We are dedicated to developing the body, mind, and spirit of adults and children with the practice of Traditional Okinawan Isshinryu Karate.

Our Kyu’s are taught true skills to defend themselves, respect others, and have confidence in their abilities! CLASS SCHEDULE:

Mondays: 6:30-8:30pm -Enterprise Fitness
(All Ranks)

Wednesdays: 6:30-8:30pm - Enterprise Fitness
(All Ranks)

Thursdays: Monroe Aquatic Center
5:45 - 6:45pm - White / Yellow Belts
7:00 - 8:30pm Advanced Ranks (Orange & up)

Saturdays: 10:30am-12:30pm - Fairview Park “Class in the Grass”


On Mondays, classes are held at Enterprise 24-hour Fitness, 2585 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110, led by Master Don Gyr, 6th Dan and Sensei Dave Parker, 3rd Dan. Beginners 6:30-7:30 pm; intermediate/advanced 7:30-8:30 pm. On Wednesdays, classes are held at Enterprise 24-hour Fitness, 6:30-7:30 pm led by Master Don Gyr, 6th Dan. Thursday classes are held at Monroe Aquatics & Fitness Center, 2325 Hanover Dr., Monroe, North Carolina 28112, and led by Master Don Gyr, 6th Dan and Sensei Dave Parker, 3rd Dan. Beginners 5:45-6:45 pm; intermediate/advanced 7:00-8:30 pm. Do not need to be a member of MAFC or Enterprise to attend.

Another great Monday in the books!

Beginners worked on Kata, stances, counting in Japanese, and an obstacle course of sorts. Right and left roundhouse on the body bag, forward roll into defensive stance on the crash mat, multiple punches on the Wave dummy, and square hopping!

Advanced class worked two of Master Gyr’s favorite drills.
“Shrimping” to escape a top mount and defending from a side break fall against multiple attackers!

Advanced class worked Osoto Gari, (major outer reap) Judo throw.

Beginners and Advanced classes cranked up the points sparring!

Isshin-Ryu is our focus, however recognizing your opponent’s style and providing a viable defense is important as well.

It was heard somewhere, what is an Isshinryu Manual?

For 20 years I’ve had one. My Sensei before had one for many more years and I still have the honor of keeping it. All of our Dan ranks have one.

All of our Kyu’s have one and are given one when they join our “DO”-Jo.

The manual is a guide for knowledge, reflection, and memories.
