The guides are starting to chat about the fall, October’s calendar is already getting filled in and it’s a time of year we all love. Casting a line with the covered bridge as a backdrop, and seeing a bald eagle fly overhead against the fall foliage is something to behold. The trout fishing is arguably at its best during October, with fish eating dry flies almost daily and chasing streamers on the cloudy days. The guide crew has been at it despite the recent heat wave. Scott has been on the boat and Tristan was doing some personal fishing on the Farmington with Larry. Tom has been getting clients into fish on the weekdays. We have a nice flow bump on the Housatonic and have a guide trip going out tomorrow, it’ll be nice to have a change of pace with a higher flow. July is an incredible month for smallmouth on the Housy and our favorite month to dry fly fish the Farmington. Housatonicriverguides.com

A wonderful weekend on the Housatonic- intermittent cloud cover kept temperatures comfortable, even for the big ol bear we saw at the market. The guides took out a family of 9 for a day of fun and learning on Sunday. We are the only outfitter in the area that can accommodate large groups and our guide team has over 20 years experience with corporate groups. Smallmouth fishing is on in full force. The Housatonic is a fantastic smallmouth fishery especially from late June through late August. Tristan and the crew went to the Delaware River this past weekend. They had a great time and fished to very picky and technical trout. Scott and Larry were kept busy on the raft over on the Housatonic.

We are now Housatonic River Guides- in late March of 2026, Scott Becroft purchased the guiding business from Housatonic River Outfitters, and has formed under our new name. Scott and his wife Jeanie are the owners of the new business, and Tristan is the head guide. We have the same guide team that has been on the river since 1996, with a few new additions to bring enthusiasm to the Housatonic.
