Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York, is a Yoga retreat and spiritual-educational center just over one hour from New York City, founded in 1964 by Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati (then Ramamurti S. the Catskill Mountains, the Ashram provides a serene, natural environment with woods and meadows surrounding a lake. Accommodations are simple and meals are vegetarian. We offer daily meditation programs with Yoga-Vedanta studies, chanting and readings, and daily yoga and Sanskrit classes, plus classical Indian dance and music instruction and a variety of weekend workshops and special events. The Ashram is open year-round and welcomes guests from all origins, faiths and cultural backgrounds. Ananda Ashram is also the location of the International Schools of East-West Unity (Gurukula), Inc., established by the Founder in 1992. The workshops and courses offered throughout the year cover the various aspects of Yoga, the creative arts and natural health, and East-West cultural performances highlight summer weekends and special celebrations. Guest teachers and artists from a variety of traditions are regular contributors. The Ashram philosophy is nonsectarian with an emphasis placed on Self-awareness and meditation. Guest and student accommodations provide dorm and semiprivate rooms with around sixty beds. Facilities include classrooms, meditation room, program halls, temples, memorial shrine, gift shop, seasonal swimming pool, and publication center. The inspirational Ashram environment is well suited for a meditative retreat, holistic studies and exploration of the deeper aspects of life.

World Sanskrit Day Celebration Special Programs to be announced soon

This four-day celebration is scheduled around World Sanskrit Day, celebrated on the full moon of the Indian month of Shrāvaṇa, the auspicious occasion of Rakṣhā Bandhana, which falls on Thursday, August 27, this year. The topic is Paramparā: Sanskrit Lineage. Focusing on the transmission of knowledge passed down through ancient sacred texts (śruti), other traditional texts (smṛti), and the living practices that continue today.

The event is organized in honor of the ancient language of Sanskrit by Shanta Bulkin, co-founder of the East-West Sanskrit Institute based in California, and is hosted by the School of Sanskrit at Ananda Ashram (part of ISEWU / International Schools of East-West Unity).

It is also to honor the extraordinary teaching legacies of Ashram Founder Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati (Shri Ramamurti) and of Professor Ram Karan Sharma, world-renowned Sanskrit scholar and poet.

The human voice is a God-given instrument which can joyfully help us navigate through these strange times. These classes are based on North Indian Classical Vocal Music. All levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. Yoga of Voice classes with Deepak Kumar will help you develop your singing voice, which will give you peace of mind and soul. Beneficial for all those who use their voice professionally, including actors, teachers and speakers, as well as musicians. Deepak will guide participants in meditative vocal exercises exploring raga and compositions.

Deepak Kumar Pareek is a light classical singer and composer from the state of Rajasthan, India. His music covers a wide spectrum of styles: ghazals (romantic poetry), bhajans (devotional songs), kirtan and classic film songs. Deepak first studied with his father, Shri P.N. Vyas, and later with Ustad R.F. Dagar, Ustad Moinuddin Khan and Shri Mohinderjit Singh. He has also been studying with Khayal classical singer Mrs. Kankana Banerjee, disciple of the legendary vocalist Ustad Amir Khan. Deepak is accomplished on several musical instruments including harmonium, tamboura, guitar and keyboard. He is co-director of the East-West School of Music at Ananda Ashram and as a faculty member teaches and performs regularly.

This workshop explores the Dharma Yoga Wheel as a tool for opening, strengthening, and deepening awareness in the physical practice. Rooted in the Dharma Yoga lineage and inspired by the teachings of Sri Dharma Mittra, the wheel supports expansion in the spine, shoulders, and hips while cultivating steadiness and ease. Students are invited into a gradual and intelligent approach to exploring backbends, balance, and flexibility.

Registration is necessary to reserve a wheel. Dharma Yoga Wheels will be provided.

Andrea Tymczyszyn is a 500-hour RDYT, YACEP, and sound healing practitioner rooted in the eight-limbed path of yoga. Trained at Ananda Ashram and continuing her studies in Hatha Raja Yoga with Sri Dharma Mittra (NYC), she teaches weekly at Ananda Ashram, integrating asana, pranayama, Yoga Nidra, philosophy, devotion, and sound.
