The Monett Chess Team recently sent 8 students to the state chess tournament in Columbia, MO. These were Diego Murillo, Johnathon Jett, Owen Wormington, Damiene Merida, Michael Albig, Carter Hedgpeth, Marshall Verslues, and Violet Samson.

We had 2 students medal at state! They were:
•Diego Murillo in the 9th and under division
•Marshall Verslues in the 8th and under division

In the 8th and under division, Monett Middle School placed 5th in state as a team. This was our first time attending state and we did a great job!

The Monett Chess team recently participated in the Forsyth Invitational Chess Tournament. We took home 2nd in the K-12 division and 1st in the K-8 division.

K-12
Marshall Verslues: 1st place
Michael Albig: 4th place

K-8

We had a great day at the tournament in Pittsburg, Kansas yesterday. Monett took 2nd in the K-12 division. We have several medalists who finished in the top 25, listed below. What really impressed me is that we are an especially young team, with 4 out of our 7 medalists being middle schoolers who chose to play up in the high school division. In fact, I believe we were the only school with middle schoolers playing in the high school division!

Monett took 1st place in the K-8 division and third place in the K-12 division at the Forsyth Invitational Tournament on November 1st. Here are the students who contributed to their respective team scores, as well as our medalists (1st-10th). Great job to all of our kids!

Monett sent 8 students to the Tournament of Champions back in April. For the first time ever, Monett took both first and second! Marshall Verslues finished first and Michael Albig second. They are both 6th graders! Marshall will now go head to head with the champion from the fall semester.

We had a great finish to the 2024-2025 chess season. We were able to take first in both the fall and spring, which I believe is our second repeat! Overall the kids did a great job this year. It’s now on to the spring 25 Tournament of Champions for all those who were able to place in the top 10.
