⚠️🔥 We have a controlled burn contractor hired and there may be a window with the right conditions Thursday April 9th to burn the parcel shown in blue. DO NOT BE ALARMED! This is part of our forestry management plan. We have remediated invasive species in this parcel and the next step is a controlled burn. Weather over the last year has been cooperated when the contractor has a window, but Thursday there is a chance that may align. 🔥⚠️
🌞 Did you know before development, natural wildfires occurred every 6-10 years? 🌳Controlled burns have a few benefits:
1. Mitigates the risk of uncontrolled wild fires or accidental fires from ci******es, etc. starting in the parks by burning "fuel" built up on the forest floor and does so in a safe and controlled environment.
2. Provides a buffer from wildfires on adjacent rural land by providing a buffer between rural land and park facilities as well as residential neighborhoods nearby.
3. Opens the forest floor to native species and keeps invasive species in check. This benefits native species of plans AND animals of all types from song birds and turkeys to various types of mammals by opening up site lines and also making insects and other native plants and seed available for foraging.
4. Controls pest populations including ticks. The jury is out on the effectiveness in this regard and whether the effect is direct or more indirect (opening the forest to wildlife that feeds on ticks and other insects and prey).
We and the contractor will monitor the conditions and, if needed, cancel the burn.
*Please help spread the word, however, in anticipation of this possible burn Thursday.
