Happy Monday, hope your week is off to a great start! We had a fabulous weekend in Moab. Those gals know how to hit and host!
We haven't spotlighted one of our ladies in a while so here is a gem of a lady.
Introducing Mauly Mormon, #1001
Q. What's your day job? Why did you choose that career path?
A. I am a Quality Specialist for the Informatics group at Myriad Genetics. I started at Myriad 18 years ago working in their research lab. I worked on some pretty cool projects but after a while I got sick of wearing gloves all the time and moved to the informatics group. I swore I would never have a desk job and did pretty well until now.
My degrees are in Biology and Computer Information Systems, so it’s a pretty natural fit as far as working for the man goes, but I’d really like to have my own gig someday.
Q. How did you get into derby? How long have you been skating?
A. When I left my married life I had a lot of spare time and frustration. I had recently read an article about a derby girl, she mentioned how fun it was, how it helped get/keep her in shape and how all kinds of people were involved. So I google Utah Roller derby and soon joined O’Town Derby Dames because they were the closest. This was in June of 2009. In retrospect I’m still surprised I joined and that I did so without knowing anyone who played. In 2012 I needed to quit so I could focus on my kids, but now that my youngest is 17 I thought I’d give it another try to see if I really missed it. I joined Red Rockettes, now Beehive Skate Revolution, on my birthday this year. I figured if I didn’t like it, it was only a 12 week commitment. Turns out I missed it so much I needed to join another league, so I joined LOL in April.
Q. What have been obstacles for you in your skating? How have you worked to overcome those?
A. Getting low and hitting hard. I’m tall and more of a positional blocker. I just have to keep reminding myself to get low and hit. It’ll come. One day.
Q. What would you say to yourself if you could go back in time 20 years ago? Advice?
A. I would try to instill my young self with a lot more confidence. That would take care of some bad decision making on my part.
I’d give myself some great investment advice.
I’d also say get in really great shape, the next wave of roller derby is on its way.
Q. Besides skating, what are some hobbies you enjoy?
A. Hmm, not really any current hobbies other than coloring. I get on kicks where I’ll crochet all the time, or make soaps, or sew. But then I get bored and move to the next thing. I guess you could say I’m in between hobbies right now.
Thank you Mauly! It's interesting how many ladies skate for the fun of it and also for the therapy aspect. Glad you are in a place of strength now and you're playing on LOLRD! It's been a pleasure getting to know you!
