** Road Update 6/30/24**

Forest Service Fire and Fuels crew cleared tbe Miners Basin Road of trees today June 30th.

With the intense storms we have seen recently, we are receiving more reports of trees blown down and blocking roads and trails. The photo below is from the Miners Basin road FR #0065 in the La Sal Mountains that is currently closed by fallen trees. Forest Service crews will be assessing the amount of trees knocked down and will begin clearing. Until the road is cleared access will be limited. Let us know what you are seeing out there.

Yesterday southeastern Utah experienced extreme flooding. If you recreate on public lands in canyon country you may encounter washouts, high and fast-moving water in rivers and streams, standing water, debris and impassable roads or trails. Look out for potential hazards and check the weather frequently to inform your decisions (US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado).

Kane Creek Road remains closed from Highway 191 to 500 West in Moab and you may encounter other routes that are impassable or closed.

Heartbreak is one thing, unpredictable road conditions another

Severe summer storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds, and often thunder and lightning. This can quickly change conditions in the park, especially on unpaved backcountry roads. You never know what you might encounter after a rainstorm. What was once a dry passable road can turn into an impassable bog, stream, or muddy mess like this road in the Needles District.

Before heading out on your next adventure please, please, please:

⚡ Be prepared for anything. Most backcountry roads in Canyonlands require high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles with a low range gear. If you do decide to venture out, be able to self-rescue. All drivers should carry the following items: at least one full-size spare tire, extra gas, extra water, a shovel, a high-lift jack and chains for all four tires (especially from October through April).
