Retroactively Awarding the 2021 Banana Cup to Team Alaska: The Legendary Duo of the Great American Monkey 1000

Back in 2021, the Great American Monkey 1000 started without the Banana Cup, but legends Jerry Lee and Teroy were true pioneers of the event. Decked out in a cowboy fringe leather jacket, Teroy looked like he galloped right out of a western. Meanwhile, Jerry Lee, with his poncho and sheepskin seat cover, brought a whole new meaning to riding in style.

These two tackled Black Bear Pass, one of Colorado's most treacherous trails, on their tiny CT70 clones with nothing but grit, flair, and a whole lot of humor. Cooking meals on the exhaust, fishing, camping (cowboy sleeping directly on the ground), and partying every night, they turned the entire journey into an epic adventure.

Without any fancy modifications, their bikes were as raw as they come, yet they rode like champs, barely breaking a sweat. Now, we're retroactively awarding them the Banana Cup for 2021, because legends like these deserve the ultimate recognition.

Teroy and Jerry Lee - you are Monkey 1000 legends, and deserve to be commended as such.

FORGE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE:

Every day you may be told where to go and what to do when it comes to entertainment, work, and maybe even your home life. No sense of adventure and no sense of danger.

Well, let's just say that's not the case here. You will very much be in danger and have to fend for yourself.

At the starting line, we will give you some of what we're going to call “training”? But hopefully enough knowledge to where you will understand how to ride and hopefully maintain your newfound mode of transportation.

We will provide you with a loose map of the area with very little direction and suggestions. Your only task is to complete the loop of locations using whatever roads or interconnected trails you choose to traverse ending back at the starting location within 7 days.

If you choose to conquer it solo or if you choose to put together a group of friends it will be up to you as to where and when you want to start and stop. Eat lunch or get gas. Camp or find the next town to sleep in. Or whether or not you should wipe your ass with that leaf. You'll not have a guide with you telling you what to do or where to go. You are not going to have a mechanic, a medic, or a shoulder to cry on unless you bring it with you.

RIDER REQUIREMENTS:

The Adventureman's Guild will not be responsible for any legal requirements needed for operating a motorcycle on US roadways or off-road trail systems imposed on you by your home country, state, or the state of Utah. It is in your best interest to make sure you are in compliance with any laws that apply. With that, we are giving participants the following recommendations.
Participants must be 18 years of age or older
Participants must be active Guild Members
Participants must have a valid driver's license and motorcycle endorsement.
Participants are encouraged to have proper insurance and register/plate their motorcycles in accordance with their home state's laws and in compliance with the state of Utah.
Participants are encouraged to have any necessary off-road permits required by the state of Utah.
Participants are encouraged to provide and wear a DOT-approved helmet.

MONKEY BIKE REQUIREMENTS:

Participants are highly encouraged to operate motorbikes that do not exceed the capability, reliability, and manufacturing quality of our inferior and substandard Monkey Bikes.
If you have already participated in the Great American monkey 1000 then you're in luck. You know all too well what to expect from your steed.

Ah, the Monkey 1000 – where grand adventures are had on the tiniest of motorcycles. The idea sprang to life as we rode 90cc carburetor monkey clones through the mountains and jungles of Peru. We firmly believe that the best way to soak in the surroundings is from the saddle of a tiny bike, sans windshield.

As the great Robert Pirsig put it in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance:
“In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame. On a cycle the frame is gone. You're completely in contact with it all.”

Keeping that in mind, here’s our pecking order of acceptable modes of transport for our escapades:

Carbureted Vintage Originals or Chinese Clones of CT-70 trail mini or Z-50 style Honda monkey bike – The crème de la crème for the ride. Plenty of quirks to keep you entertained, loads of capability, and parts are a doddle to find.

New Model Honda Monkey or DAX – A bit of a cop-out due to its superb capability and reliability, but it fits the aesthetic and, we must admit, they're rather cool. If you must bring one, at least give it a retro makeover.

Hard Rules:
Nothing over 150cc
No wheels over 12 inches
Retro Aesthetic

Pre-Ride Inspection:

This is where folks usually muck it up: loading their gear. Make sure you’ve crafted some sort of secure gear-carrying contraption before the race. Keep your gear low and tight. Think about how you'll carry extra fuel (you’ll definitely need it). If our inspector deems your bike unsafe when fully loaded, you won't be riding until it's sorted.

So, there you have it. Let's keep it tiny, keep it safe, and most importantly, keep it monkey!
