The Founding of Gary’s Leather Shop

The first horses I ever rode were our farm draft horses, Maude and Nellie. We held onto the hames and rode back to the old barn where the horses were fed and turned out to pasture for the night. We were very small preschool age children and those rides were the highlight of the day! Many years later my older bro

thers started riding horses at bird dog trails, etc., and eventually four of us siblings and their spouses possessed multiple mounts. The family farm had plenty of pasture and we could ride many miles along the East Fork of White River and onto adjoining farmland. Sadly, I’m the only one in the family who still rides. My brother purchased some leather working equipment and I helped him with a few projects. I started repairing my own tack and eventually purchased my brother’s shop equipment. After working leather as a hobby for several years, Gary’s Leather Shop was founded. In 1998 my Father passed away. A few months later, my brother’s mare foaled the big black horse, Prince, pictured above. My brother sold him to me when he was five years old and I’ve ridden him ever since. I currently have three horses and a pony. I work in my leather shop nearly every day. Life has been very good to me and I feel truly blessed. Gary L. Mundy

I made this key fob nearly 30 years ago from some latigo my brother had when I bought his leather tools. I keep thinking it will break and test it once in a while. It looks like it may outlast me.

I tried to make a bow around age 7 after watching my brother, Stanley, make one from Osage Orange. This is my first functional bow completed recently using pignut hickory wood. My attempts to make a bow from Osage are ongoing (it's much more difficult to work). It's even more challenging to find an Osage tree with straight grain.

I've always been intrigued by the legend of the fabled English long bow and sought to make something similar. With no European Yew trees growing in my back yard, a replica is quite impossible. This is, in fact, a "self bow" made entirely from a single tree. Try making one of these yourself and you will have a new respect for ancient man who developed this technology thousands of years ago.

My goal was to make a knife that looked like it just came off a pirate ship. 7" blade, about 12" overall, 5160 spring steel hand forged from a 3/4-ton pickup truck leaf spring, tang is stacked spirals of 16-ounce natural vegetable-tanned steer hide treated with Black Rock Leather 'N' Rich and top coated with Shellac. The butt is 1/4" steel held with peened over end. I normally give my knives away to friends but I may keep this one cause I really, really like it! Razor sharp and holds an edge even after abuse. Must have got the heat treat and temper just right, a rarity in my case. I'm strictly an amateur metal worker.

Second knife is one I carry a lot, a vintage Western knife. I designed the friction-fit sheath to be carried at an angle. It can be worn by righty or lefty, cross draw either way. Friends drop by with your knife and I'll make you a sheath like this for free. Note this style can only be used on knives with small guards.

Due to life-changing health issues I no longer own a single horse. I've had at least four and as many as six since 1985. I loved each one of them. Several are buried on my property. Some were rescue horses that I never rode. In my younger days I recall riding four or five in a single afternoon. I trained several green broke horses and broke a couple from scratch. Yesterday, with the help of my nephew, I delivered my last two horses to their new home, a beautiful horse farm. I am so grateful to have found wonderful homes for all my horses. I gave the horses away. I can visit Prince and KayDee whenever I want. Prince was foaled on my parent's farm on 7/1/98 and named by my Mother. I am very sad to no longer be able to take care of horses. Fortunately, I have several hobbies I can still enjoy. These things happen to all of us somehow someway.
