Yet another reason to start or continue exercising despite challenging circumstances....

A new study found that high intensity exercise increased glucose consumption by internal organs, reducing the energy needed for tumors to spread. Researchers say regularly engaging in aerobic exercise could reduce the risk of metastatic cancer by as much as 72%.

Tomorrow, January 19, is the day most people give up on their New Year Resolution's (NWR). Depending on where you’re at in your journey, you have to be brutally honest with yourself and find out your 2 why’s:

Why did I set and begin to achieve my NWR?

From one of my previous posts, you may have to go down to 5 Why’s deep to get at your core pain that you are needing to address. If you didn’t do this before starting on your NWR, it could be that your ‘Superficial Want’ wasn’t a ‘Deep Need’.

Why did I already quit or now struggling to continue with my NWR?

Am I frustrated with the lack of visible results?

Did I start too fast, do too much, get injured, burned out or overwhelmed?

Did my support network, (family, friends, colleagues) abandon or discourage me?

Did I try to do this on your own without a workout buddy, professional help from a Trainer, Diet Counselor or Life Coach?

Did I fall into old bad habits (binge watching TV, going home after work instead of the gym, gorging on junk food, sleeping in rather than getting up early to exercise)?

There is no perfect workout which means every workout is a compromise and therefore, sometimes the best workout for you, is the one you’re currently NOT doing. Unless you have unlimited time, energy, recovery and money, you have to allocate your limited reserves in each of these 4 categories based on your priorities. To drive home this point further:

I trained a brother and sister high school athletes in multiple sports and some sessions lasted 4 hours and still was not able to thoroughly cover every training component

Even if you are wealthy and retired, chances are you are way past your peak athletic years, which is typically in your mid 20’s +/- 5 years, which means your energy and recovery have been declining for many years

Even if you were recently a world class athlete, were highly paid and retired before you peaked or at least, before you started to decline, there will NEVER be a person that will simultaneously hold the world records in the:

100 Meter Dash
Marathon
World’s Strongest Man Competition

So you have to ask yourself; Do you want to be a Specialist or a Generalist (a Jack or Jill of all skills like a Decathlete / Heptathlete in Track & Field)? If you’re having trouble deciding and you’re not involved in any single-event sport or activity, I typically recommend being a Generalist, as that will have the most carryover affect to activities of daily living and make life overall, much easier.

So don’t strive for perfection, strive for an individually-optimized training program.

Muscles are…

Stimulated standing up in the weight room

Fueled sitting down in the kitchen

Built laying down in the bedroom

Optimized by leaning on your Trainer

I learned a new word today…….Snaccident….a regrettably-uncontrollably-gluttonous binge on unhealthy food. This is a food felony of the worst kind sure to alert the Portion-Control Police and a long sentence in the Calorie Correctional Institution. Examples of this cravingly-criminal behavior include:

Claiming to hide a bag of Oreo’s in a glass of milk

Making a bag of chips vanish

Causing a cake to disappear

Having a box of doughnuts evaporate

Rendering Magician, David Copperfield, speechless and envious that your illusion skills are better than his

Forcing a carton of ice cream to melt…..in your mouth

Shoveling a snow cone down your throat

Hangrily attacking a box of Twinkies

Entering a bag of licorice in the Witness Protection Program

Does your refrigerator need a restraining order from you?

Have you been caught trespassing too frequently in your pantry?

Do you have frostbitten fingertips from repeatedly raiding the freezer?

Have you been ticketed for illegal parking at the kitchen table?

So are you a Devouring Diva???

There’s an old business axiom that applies to training, “Inspect What You Expect”. Simply record what you accomplish every workout. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small notepad and pen or a smartphone app, whatever works best for you. I prefer pen and paper as I have been practicing what I preach for over 30 years. Unless you have a photographic memory or do the exact same workout every time, it’s very difficult if not impossible to properly make workout variable adjustments to progress when you’re ready and regress when you’ve overdone it without being able to refer to your recent efforts. Remember ‘Write Leads to Might’ and ‘Guess Leads to Mess’.

Dentist’s Office, “You Don’t Have to Floss All Your Teeth, Just the One’s You Want to Keep”.

Mechanic’s Shop, “You Can Change Your Oil or You Can Change Your Engine”.

My Office, “You Don’t Have to Exercise Any of Your Muscles, Only the One’s You Want to Still be Able to Use“

I did another hill workout over on Whitaker Drive in Missoula. With about an 8° slope and about ¼ mile long starting @ Spanish Peak Drive, it’s steep and long enough to challenge all fitness levels; whether you’re power walking, running, sprinting, bear crawling, duck walking, lunging or hopping.

The crisp autumn air inhaled deeply, is so invigorating that it will make you feel alive and the deer herd that grazes in the adjacent field, just adds to the experience. Initially, the deer watch me cautiously but soon lose interest, realizing I’m no threat, meaning, I’m nowhere near fast enough to chase let alone catch them!

All are welcome to come join me, for no cost, as I’m out there twice weekly while the weather still holds up. Just message me and let’s get some ‘Thrills and Chills Getting’ Up the Hills’!

Manage your life like the buttons on a remote control:

REPLAY: Look back at your past wins. People that have energized you. Activities that bring you the most joy. Feel the warm glow of nostalgia and success.

PAUSE: Take a moment and be grateful for what you currently have. You are more blessed than you realize.

FAST-FORWARD: Look ahead. Set goals. Figure out what your ideal life looks like and make small changes to get there.

STOP: If something in your life isn't working - then stop it. Insanity has been defined as doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. Remove negative people and activities from your life.

MUTE: Silence your inner voice of doubt and the outer voices of doubters. If you think you can or can’t, you’re correct either way, Being optimistic and confident helps you have a ‘Can Do’ attitude.

PLAY: Hit your "play" button in life. Take purposeful action. This includes...
Smile
Laugh
Dance
Sing
Volunteer
Hugs
Board Games
Be Spontaneously Mischievous
Be Strategically Mischievous
Break a sweat each day

I can help you push the ‘Fast Forward’ and ‘Play’ buttons
