Getting birds to come to you is not the easiest way, it takes lots of work, patience, and attention to detail. Unfortunately this clip, while depicting birds in easy gun range, is exactly 5 minutes before legal shooting time on the Flathead Indian Reservation which is sunrise to sunset. Several other groups of hunters apparently did not through ignorance or intentionally started shooting 1/2 hour before sunrise which is the Montana regulation. This has been a recurring theme up there. The reason for this is to make sure that pheasant hunters have the proper light to distinguish roosters from hens and can easily transmit to picking drakes from hens on the waterfowl side. There were a few unhappy hunters that got ticketed that morning, but alas there are many others that get away with shooting too early and in so doing screw up all the other hunters who follow the rules….

I think it is safe to say that this season was a school of hard knocks… birds constantly changing their roosts, flight lines, food choices. If you thought you had something figured out, well think again. It was strange to be hunting in November in poring rain and setting up in green grass sheet water…then same thing in December. 50 degree days and bird behavior completely opposite of normal…. These pictures are from the last few days of the season..
