September is still prime wildfire season and heading into Labor Day weekend, extra preparation matters.

Cooler nights can make a campfire tempting. But after a long, hot summer, forests and grasslands across the West are dry and primed to burn. Before lighting one, check local restrictions and then ask yourself: Even if a fire is allowed, is it a responsible choice today? In many places, the answer may be no.

If conditions are safe and fires are permitted, come prepared with:
» Plenty of water
» A bucket
» A shovel
» An established, cleared fire ring
» A way to call for help—or a plan if you’re outside cell service

When you’re done: 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐢𝐭. 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐫 𝐢𝐭. 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

Before heading out, use onX wildfire layers to see active fires nearby and confirm current restrictions with the local land-management agency. Sometimes the most responsible campfire is no campfire at all.

We’re seeking high-impact projects that open access, restore lands and trails, and serve a variety of outdoor recreationists. Whether you’re a longtime partner or an organization we should know, we hope to see your project in the stack of applications. And if you know a group doing great work, help us spread the word!

Apply by October 2: https://www.onxmaps.com/onx-access-initiatives/outdoor-recreation-access-stewardship-grants

Note: Off-roading-specific projects should apply through the Trail Revival Project.

‼️The comment period is officially open ‼️

The U.S. Forest Service has outlined three alternatives for the future of the Roadless Rule: keep it in place, fully repeal it, or reduce the acres of inventoried roadless. The preferred alternative in the Forest Service's Proposed Rule is to fully repeal it. Now’s the time to weigh in.

Substantive comments matter most. To help you dig into the details, we mapped the inventoried roadless areas and analyzed the recreational opportunities within them. Here’s a snapshot of what we found in current Roadless Rule areas:
🥾 17,715 miles of hiking and biking trails
🚙 7,201 miles of full-size motorized trails and roads
🛻 2,494 miles of ATV + side-by-side trails
🛵 2,167 miles of motorized singletrack
❄️ 1,295 miles of snowmobile trails
⛷️ 1,492 mapped ski routes
🦌 58% of Roadless Rule areas overlap elk habitat
🐻 78% of Roadless Rule areas overlap black bear habitat

Head to the link in our bio to explore the map—we just added the three alternatives, so you can toggle between them and see what could change on the ground.

Explore the details. Bring your experience. Make a clear, substantive comment. Make your voice heard.
Comments close September 21.

NEW! The Public Lands Comment Hub

Most people don't realize they have opportunities to comment before public land decisions become final. That's why we built a free, interactive map of active public comment periods across four federal land agencies. Heavy lifting on us, more commenting from you.

Whether you hunt, fish, ride, hike, climb, ride, or simply care about public lands, you can now see what's happening where you recreate all in one place, and submit comments directly through the official agency websites.

Public lands belong to all of us. Public participation is part of how they're managed.

Comment today to inform public comment opportunities tomorrow.

The rulebook behind how your national forests are managed is up for a change — including whether public comment periods will continue to be part of this process. The U.S. Forest Service wants to reclassify a chunk of its internal guidance documentation as "advisory only," meaning public comment opportunities wouldn't be required for future changes.

The Forest Service is also asking for public input. Comments are open now through July 31st on this proposed rule RIN 0596-AD74.

Off-grid exploration means going beyond cell service. That's why we partnered with Overwatch x Rescue to bring you onX SOS: an emergency rescue add-on that connects you directly to a 24/7 Crisis Response Center right from the app you already use. Use a satellite SMS messaging-enabled device to get professional rescue coordination and financial coverage in the moments you need it most.

If something goes wrong on the trail, trained rescue coordinators assess the situation, coordinate the response, and stay with you until help arrives. No claims process, no surprise bills, no separate app to download.

Because the best backup plan is the one you already have with you.

onX SOS is now available in onX Hunt and onX Offroad powered by Overwatch x Rescue. Coming to OnX Backcountry later this summer.
