Over the past 3 years, we have had the utmost pleasure covering high school sports in Orange County. Over the last two posts, we have highlighted 18 athletes who we regard as a part of the TPS Hall of Fame. To conclude our Hall of Fame, there are 3 final athletes we’d like to highlight who are some of the most memorable and talented athletes in OC high school sports history. To begin, we’d like to honor Austin Overn. Overn was one of the fastest and most dynamic athletes in OC history, who dominated as an outfielder for the Foothill Knights for years, before deciding to take on football senior year. As a wide receiver senior year, Overn broke county and school records, landing him state and national recognition. Overn is now playing baseball as a sophomore at USC, where he was one of the best freshman ballplayers in the country. Next, we’d like to honor Trabuco Hills two sport star Will Burns. Burns was an incredibly talented QB, with an absolute rocket of an arm. He saw the field incredibly well, and was a decisive passer. As an infielder for Trabuco Hills, Burns was a sure handed fielder, and absolutely raked as a hitter. Burns can hit for power and to all parts of the field, and his widespread skill set is what landed him at Texas Tech, where he is playing both baseball and football. Burns is one of the premiere two sport athletes in OC history. Lastly, we’d like to honor Matthew Morrell as the last ‘MVP’, of our Hall of Fame. The Cypress Centurion product, much like Overn and Burns, dominated in football and baseball throughout his time in high school. Morrell racked up huge numbers as a wide out, using his projectable frame and athleticism to constantly get open and make plays. As a RHP and OF, Morrell dominated, and was constantly the best player on the field. Morell hit for incredible power, and was a tough out every time he stepped into the box. Morrell is now a freshman at top ranked Oregon State. These three athletes are part of a special breed of two sport athletes, who dominated and found real success in numerous sports throughout their high school career. Congrats to these three athletes, we can’t wait to see how far you go in your athletic careers!

For the Capistrano Valley Cougars, this year is a new chapter in their storybook. For the last few years, Capo played in shootout after shootout, led by record breaking QB Trey Kukuk, who is off playing college ball now. This year, Capo will look to a lot of new faces, but also some familiar ones, this time around, on the defensive side of the ball. Senior linebacker Jackson Sievers is a longtime starter for the Cougars, and flies around the gridiron. With a strong 6’2, 220LB frame, Sievers intimidates everyone on the offensive side of the ball. Junior Reily Walker had a great year last year, earning himself South Coast league first team honors, as another great linebacker. Similar to Sievers, Walker is everywhere on the defensive side of the ball, and a great piece for the Capo squad. Lastly, junior wideout Hudson Campbell looks to take a massive leap this year, as he was a top option last year for the Cougars. Though, as a part of a new look wide receiver core, Campbell looks to utilize his 6’2 frame to get downhill and make plays. Behind head coach Sean Curtis, and offensive guru Dan Selway, many expect Capo Valley to be a competitive football team this year.

Cypress is a surefire contender in Orange County and all of CIF SS this year. Coming off a 13-1 season, the Centurions look to repeat their success in the Empire league and beyond. It all starts with dual threat QB Aidan Houston. Houston threw for over 3k yards last year, and ran for over 1100. Aidan is a straight matchup nightmare for all defensive coordinators. Cypress’ defense is anchored by senior inside linebacker Rocco Burdett. Burdett had a whopping 18 TFL’s last year, and lives in opposing teams backfields. Rocco also found the end zone 8 times last year, and is a great weapon for Cypress. Finally, senior Bruno Caldarella is a dominant force on the defensive line. Caldarella has a great frame, and compiled 8 sacks to go along with 85 total tackles last year. Watch for Cypress to make another deep run this year.

This year, the Foothill Knights are returning a ton of starters, as the team looks to rebound after an off year last year. It all starts with returning Senior QB Nicolas Miali, who is poised to have a nice year after gaining a year of experience starting last season. The heart and soul of the Knights is running back Aaron Mitchell, who’s entering his third year of varsity football. Mitchell is a bruising downhill back, and a player any coach would love to have. Lastly, the Knights receiving core is led by senior Jack Zerkel, who is a versatile route runner with breakaway speed. Despite a tough Crestview league, the Knights are going to be a hard competitor this year with big expectations.

Coming off a CIF SS title win, Laguna Beach is looking to repeat their success from last year. The Breakers see a lot of their key pieces returning from last year’s championship win, but none more instrumental than their three headed monster on offense. Tight end Ryner Swanson is one of the best tight ends in the state, and has dominated defenses for a long time. QB Jackson Kollock had an incredibly efficient sophomore year, notably throwing 36 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions. Lastly, running back Nick Rogers can do it all offensively, and provides some great versatility for the Breakers. Led by these three great players, watch for Laguna to make some noise yet again this year.

The Edison High School Chargers are a new look team this year, but don’t temper your expectations for them. While the Chargers lost 33 seniors, their offense will remain high powered, led by star receiver Mason York. York has the ceiling of a top 5 receiver in the county, but don’t be surprised if he surpasses that. Junior QB Savelio Niumata has been turning heads this offseason, and is bound to lead the Chargers this year. Lastly, their offensive line is anchored by senior Logan Shill, who is a powerhouse at the tackle position. Watch for Edison this year in the Sunset League, as they have a great chance to contend for the league title.

Year in and year out, the Mission Viejo Diablos field an uber talented football team, capable of making deep postseason runs. Despite the departure of team cornerstones Kadin Semonza and Mikey Matthews, the Diablos are still poised to compete at a high level this year, thanks to what should be a phenomenal defense. MV might have the best secondary in all of Orange County, led by 5 star Dijon Lee Jr, and Boise State commits Travis Anderson and Treyvon Tolmaire. Between these three studs and a great coaching staff, Mission Viejo is sure to be a contender in all of Orange County this year.
