Just a little May snow to kick off the summer season here at the huts. Road in was easy to the trailhead with the F-150, then a 2.7 mile hike with a few trees to step over and a little snow.

Patches are back for a limited time … they’ll be stocked at the hut (alongside some sweet cards from ) for a few lucky guests this summer and fall.

A few sneak peaks from the archives of Ben + friends build the OG Refugio. Many of you have asked how you can help with our Airbnb OMG! project — Gondola Village at Holy Cross — and we wanted to open up a few work weeks / weekends this season for friends and family to help out.

We have lots of different areas we need help (from carpentry to welding to landscaping) but can always train folx, and these work days are all about enjoying this beautiful place with awesome individuals. We work a few hours, then have fun (or vice versa) — fly fishing in nearby lakes, scrambling unnamed 12000’ ridges, spring corn laps (in May at least!). We have food, cabin space, tents, sleeping bags, rods, and more, so just bring yourself and your work clothes. This is just for fun, trade a little labor for an awesome spot to stay and some yummy meals.

Our two new gondolas (from and ) made it to our staging area in Colorado! Nailed the drive timing right before the snow started again, nice windy drive through Utah and Glenwood Canyon but mostly clear roads til the slushy, lockers-required final driveway. Now waiting for the next weather window to fly!

Quick PSA for anyone looking to recreate in Homestake Valley the next few weeks

Access roads to the Missouri-Fancy and Brady Sopris trailheads in Eagle County will be closed to motorized vehicles June 6-17 while crews conduct heavy maintenance.

Fancy-French roads (FSR704 and FSR 727) will be closed to allow crews to haul, place and compact new road base. Holy Cross City Jeep Road (FSR759) will also be closed because it is a narrow, one-way road with no alternative downhill motorized route available during the Fancy-French closure.

Lonesome Lake trailhead, Whitney Lake trailhead and Gold Park Campground will remain open and accessible by motor approved motor vehicles. Homestake Road (FSR 703) and dispersed camping remain open.

Hikers are encouraged to choose alternatives to Missouri-Fancy and Brady Sopris trails during the closure because the road and trailheads will only be accessible by non-motorized means. Parking will be limited to existing pull-outs and dispersed camping sites. No day-use parking is allowed at Gold Park Campground.

The road project is a cooperative effort between the White River National Forest and Colorado Springs Utilities.

We appreciate your patience while Colorado Springs Utilities completes this important maintenance to improve the conditions of these popular roads. Please respect the closures and expect heavy equipment traffic in the area.

Do you need to slow down and go for a long skin or snowshoe? The days are longer, the road is still snow-covered (mostly), the speed is as fast as you can comfortably move your body, and the reward at the end is such an amazing view we can’t even show a picture (though you can probably find some). Road opens mid May, til then there are still a few prime spring ski weekends available.
