Are you or your Scout heading to a Grey Wolf NYLT course in the next few weeks? The key word you want to know is Permethrin. Read on to learn how to use it to treat your clothes and gear. Treated clothes and DEET on exposed skin will send those hungry mosquitoes and ticks to feast on someone else.

Permethrin is considered a pesticide not a repellent. As such, it is regulated by the EPA. Using it for a purpose other than labelled on the package is not legal. Be sure to only use a permethrin product specifically labelled for use on clothing. It will have no more than 0.5% permethrin.

Take your uniform shirts, shorts, socks, sweatshirts, and other outer wear (no underwear please) outside and hang them up (clothes line works great). Spray everything until it is damp (not dripping). DO NOT inhale the over spray or get it on your skin. Let your clothes dry thoroughly. The treatment should last through six washings.

Camping update from Travis Sutten. Grey Wolf will be following the same guidelines as Summer Camp

KEY CHANGES AND REMINDERS FOR SUMMER CAMP 2020
Greetings Leaders,

We are very excited to welcome your Scouts to camp this summer. Supplies and food are on hand, staff are trained and your campsite is ready for you!

Your safety is our top priority. We have aligned our practices with COVID-19 guidelines from state health departments, Centers for Disease Control and the American Camp Association. We’ve also worked extensively with a group of physicians to review and approve our plans.

The key points of our plan focus on:

Health screenings & response
Social distancing and smaller groups
Increased sanitation and cleanliness
Now we need your help to carry it out. Camp is a shared community that will require all of us to ‘give a little’ so that we can keep this summer open for all.

Though it may look and feel different this summer, camp continues to be our vital connection to each other, our mission and the outdoors.

Thank you for your commitment, time and effort to make camp a possibility for our kids this summer.

Key Changes & Reminders for 2020

Health Screenings:

Daily health screenings begin the day you depart and continue throughout your experience.
Drivers should not allow anyone to enter a car who does not pass the health screening. Any vehicles containing an individual who does not pass the screening will be sent back home.
Units will need to bring a thermometer to camp (we recommend temporal).
Illness Protocols

If a participant uses medications for seasonal allergies, this should be noted on the health form and they should begin taking it prior to their arrival at camp.
Any participants exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 will be referred to a physician for evaluation.
If a participant from your unit receives a test, your unit will need to isolate and may need to return home.
If a participant tests positive for COVID-19, your unit will need to return home. Others will be informed as needed. Privacy will be maintained.
Social Distancing & Smaller Groups

Your unit will do almost all activities as a unit, our goal is to limit interactions between units.
Following state guidelines, we need all to practice social distancing (6ft among participants).
Each participant will need to bring 3 face coverings and follow our camp guidelines for use.
We are limiting camp to just participants, which means no visitors this year.
Tenting

Best practice is to tent with a member of your household or as individuals.
If tents are shared, social distancing should be maintained (6ft) and head to toe sleeping is recommended.
Transportation

Best practice is to only ride in a vehicle with a member of your own household.
Other arrangements are at the discretion of parents and effort should be made to:
Increase physical distance among passengers.
Wear face coverings while in the vehicle.
Tentmates and patrol mates should be in the same vehicle.
Additional Items to Pack

Please check your camp’s website for an updated packing list.
Thermometer (temporal preferred) for daily health screenings.
Lifejackets (Scouts BSA) – to limit sharing, Scouts should bring their own life jacket if possible. These pieces of equipment are difficult to sanitize between use.
Though camp will provide basic supplies we recommend additional tissues, hand sanitizer and disinfectant.
Sanitation

Expect to wash or sanitize hands frequently. Reminders will be shared throughout the day.
Program equipment will be sanitized between users by camp staff.
Your unit will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing items in your campsite. Materials will be provided daily but we encourage you to bring your own too.
Many ‘self-serve’ items in dining and program areas have been removed from service.
Day of Arrival

Your unit may be assigned a specific time to arrive at camp. Watch for details to be sent a week prior to your arrival.
If drivers are not staying for camp, we ask that they drop off their participants and not linger.
Each participant’s health screening checklist will be reviewed by staff.
Risk Acknowledgement

All participants and parents of participants need to review the COVID-19 Statement of Risk.
All participants should be prepared to return home early if a member of their unit becomes ill or if required by state or local authorities because of changing ‘stay at home’ orders.

After the disappointment of not being able to hold our normal four weeks of Grey Wolf NYLT, we are excited to offer two weeks of the course coming up in August.

Week A - August 2 - August 8
Week B - August 9 - August 15

What your Scout should expect at Grey Wolf NYLT

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

For many years, junior leader training (JLT) was an important part of the leadership training continuum of BSA local councils throughout America. In 2003 and 2004, a task force of leadership experts and hundreds of Scouts in pilot courses across the nation reviewed and tested every aspect of the NYLT syllabus, which incorporates the latest leadership ideas and presents fresh, vital and meaningful training for today’s Scouts.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he/she must KNOW, and what he/she must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
NYLT is a six-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.

Built on the legacy of past JLT successes, NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, games, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer.

Grey Wolf update, Staff has been selected to serve Weeks A & B.

Scoutmaster Mr Smuder along with Co-SPLs Aidan Lanz and Ben Haland will lead the staff for Week A.

Scoutmaster Mrs Lillemo along wit Co-SPLs Jacob Whitsitt and Adam Higley will lead Week B.

Participants have completed the re-rigistration process for Weeks A and B and should be watching their emails for confirmation of their assigned week. Please pay carefull attention to the attachements sent out.

We are working delegently to modify the program to keep up to the current guidelines and directives for Covid 19.

For example, all program activities will be outside, Patrols will be reduce to 6, to increase spacing. Patrols sites will be spread out into additonal sites. Increased camp cleaning and sanitation will be in place. Specific details are still evolving as we learn more about overnight camping.

To provide the Grey Wolf NYLT experience our Scouting units have come to expect, we have made the decision to provide two sessions of the leadership conference in August. Week A will commence on Aug 2, and Week B will commence on Aug 9. We need to stress that our summer camps are not yet approved to open, so this information is tentative.
Registered Scouts for Grey Wolf 2020 have been notified of this change.

Attention all 2020 Grey Wolf NYLT Registrants, Families, and Unit Leaders,

As you may have heard, in coordination with our key volunteers, Northern Star Scouting has made the difficult decision to delay the opening of our summer camp operations until July 5, 2020 for all overnight programs due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This decision has impacted our scheduled Grey Wolf program. In addition to the nearly two month shutdown of in-person staff developments already experienced, this announcement impacts three of our scheduled four course weeks directly and has also impacted the ability for our 100% volunteer Grey Wolf Staff to complete the preparation needed to open in time to provide a quality program.

We have been working hard along the way to develop scenarios to ensure we are able to still offer this important experience to as many Scouts as possible this summer. We are currently evaluating staffing availability for alternative dates and are planning to still offer this Greyt program, albeit on a smaller scale. As we continue to wait for local and state health officials to release critical guidance that we will need to meet in order to reopen our overnight camps, we will be putting plans in place for a rescheduled program. Information regarding new program dates, how to register, and the refund process should your Scout not be able to attend the new dates will be available and sent to you by Friday, May 22, 2020.

The health and safety of our participants continues to be our top priority. We are actively working on key protocols (see below) for cleaning, sanitation and social distancing that will be necessary for our Grey Wolf program to open. We are also benchmarking our processes against those developed by industry experts for the American Camp Association and the CDC.

Examples of Changes to Grey Wolf 2020:

Heightened sanitation and cleaning – more frequent required handwashing, greater access to handwashing and hand sanitizer, additional cleaning of high touch surfaces, sanitizing program equipment between each use, elimination of self-serve dining and program supplies, additional screening protocols before travel and once arriving at camp.
Social distancing – course schedules will be simplified to reduce contact among attendees, large group gatherings in confined spaces will be avoided. Single person tenting will be encouraged, capacities will be reduced.
