Last week, I joined the biking world with a new bike! It felt so privileged to walk into a bike store, get fitted and test bikes while my 3 year old tooled around on a strider. John and I have talked about getting bikes for years and we finally pulled the trigger on it.
We also invested in a snap bike trainer which is incredible. It transforms your indoor rides into virtual rides that control your resistance and give virtual workouts. Holy cow this is fun!
Since becoming a mom and switching careers, I’ve lost some (not all!) of my identity as a personal trainer. I traded in abs for a softer body that has sustained 2 kids through their first year of life. I’ve distanced myself from diet culture in favor of more intuitive and aware eating while still setting goals. I’ve traded in long cardio sessions for heavy weights that give me strength to chase my kids (and the occasional canine, I’m looking at you ).
John and I are making a concerted effort to undo the language we were taught by 90s and 00’s society around our bodies, weight and food. We occasionally track food as a tool to monitor how we feel when we eat xyz, but overall, we are learning to be comfortable with the ambiguous. It’s a slower lifelong journey that we’re getting used to, but we hope to teach our girls that our bodies are valued in all shapes. That your worth is not a number. And that all bodies are awesome regardless of weight and jeans size.
Fitness is really fun, and our family thrives when we’re active together. We’re looking forward to strapping the kids in the Burley trailer and adventuring everywhere! But until it warms up, we’re having a lot of fun on the trainer amidst the chaos of the playroom.
