It's been a minute since I have recorded an episode of Mu**er Puckers. After going through the website stats that I haven't looked at in over a year- I am shocked. There are still 1000's of downloads a month. With zero marketing (not that I did much before) but still....no new episodes and people are still downloading and listening. Maybe it's all our Chinese friends after my data - well the pieces they don't already have- but wow. I'm so back and forth on this as it coincides with my love/not love relationship with youth/Junior hockey- add in the new NCAA rule...... I don't have a lot of time due to the new job - but maybe I'll do something. IDK. I sure enjoyed the interviews and talking hockey with people. I think my experiences have been pretty deep in the market....I'll keep contemplating. As I've discovered: Not making a decision is still a decision in and of itself. When I decided to use all four September episodes to pay homage to Su***de Awareness/Prevention and Mental Health Awareness month, I wanted to bring four different aspects on the subject. The response has been overwhelming. I received messages from many, but these three in particular stand out:
“After listening to your episode about the Keith Milano Fund with Larry and Denise I felt comfortable in asking my son if he was going to harm himself. My son responded that he was definitely feeling stressed and wanted help.”
“I asked my 16U if he was feeling overwhelmed, stressed and out of touch with friends. He said no, but my non hockey playing daughter heard the question and responded that those were the feelings she was feeling.”
“After listening to the episode with Rob Thorsen sharing his experience with losing his son to su***de, something in the episode triggered a realization that my husband was definitely outside of himself. I asked him if he felt like he wanted to hurt himself and he said ‘Yes, I need help’. I immediately got him into a psychiatric hospital within 2 hours and I can’t imagine what might have happened if I didn’t know to ask.”

There’s more to each one but the outcomes all around were: a more open and normalized conversation about a “taboo” topic, people feeling able to admit they need help and that the actual help itself occurred. I can’t help but feel overwhelmed and a bit heavy myself with the outcome from my little podcast with these wonderful people I have met on the hockey journey who were willing to share their story with my listeners.

“My dad and my mom really did support me, specifically my father, because of the early mornings, my mom liked to sleep in a bit, my dad used to drive me to the rinks and drive me to practice and drive me to games and we developed a really close bond.
When I was turning 16, and my father was having trouble driving his car, and he gave me the keys to forever drive to the games myself now with him as a passenger, there were two things that I didn’t know.
First, I had no idea that two years later I would be in the NHL. No idea. And the other was that five years later, my father was going to die of Alzheimer’s. I didn’t know that. Mom, Dad was only about 54 when he got sick, and you went out and got your driver’s license, and when I moved away from home later that year to play hockey in London, you drove to London every weekend to watch me play. You would spend the weekend, and we had some really good times. So, Mom, you’re a hero to me, for doing that.”
