Some very good information about the founder of our Taekwon-Do.
...some history you might not know about General Choi Hong Hi
1918. Birthday November 9th
1929. Had to leave school for leading an independence movement against the Japanese occupation
1929. Sent to study calligraphy under Master Han Il D**g
1936 started TaeKyon under Master Han
1938 sent to Japan by his father for modern education and started Karate training in Kyoto.
1940 receives 1st dan in karate and goes to Tokyo for university.
1942 receives 2nd dan in karate. Becomes karate instructor at Tokyo YMCA
1943 enlists in Japanese army. Posted in Pyongyang
1943 accused of planning another student uprising against the Japanese and sent to Japanese army prison for preliminary trial. Trail last eight months
1944 courtmartialed sentenced to 7 year prison term
1945 WWII ends and sent free. Moves to Seoul, Korea
1946 January commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the new Korean Army. Becomes platoon leader in 4th regiment at Kwang-Ju. Starts teaching the beginning of Taekwon-Do to National Armed forces.
1946 April promoted to First Lieutenant, transferred to TaeJon in charge Sexond regiment. Continues teaching martial art to soldiers
1947 promoted to Captain then Major
1948 posted in Seoul as Director of Logistics Department at Army HQ. Teaches TKD to American Military Police school in Korea. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel
1949 goes to USA for 1 year military training. Introduces TKD to the USA. Promoted to colonel.
1951 promoted to Brigadier General. Organized Ground General School in Pusan, Korea himself Assistant Commandant. Sent to the front lines of Korean War as Director if Intelligence.
1952 Chief of Staff of First Corps. Brief General MacArthur during his visit to Kangnung while in command of the 5th Infantry Division
1953 punished book on military intelligence.
1953 organized 29th Infantry Division on Cheju Island, the spearhead if Taekwon-Do into the military
1954 established Oh Do Kwan (Gym of My Way) and becomes director of Chong Do Kwan (Gym of Blue Wave) the largest civilian gym in the country. Also promoted to Major General
1955 submits the name Taekwon-Do for Koreans new national martial art.
1957 elected Vice-President of Taekwon-Do Assocuation of Korea.
1959 leads demonstration team to throughout South East Asia. Authors first book on Taekwon-Do
1960 voted President of Taekwon-Do Association of Korea. Visits Texas and sets up Taekwon-Do Association in USA. Returned to Korean as Director of Intelligence of Korea.
1961 assumes command of 6th Army corps and the 7th US Army division. Taekwon-Do introduces at West Point
1962 appointed as Korean Ambassador to Malaysia. Introduces Taekwon-Do to Malay Peninsula
1963 Taekwon-Do Association of Malaysia formed
1963 Taekwon-Do exhibition at United Nations building in New York
1964 Taekwon-Do Association of Singapore formed
1965 as Ambassador and Two Star retired General leads a Goodwill Mission of Taekwon-Do tour of 14 countries in Europe, Africa, Middle East and South East Asia.
1966 formed International Taekwon-Do Federation with Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Italy, Turkey, United Arab Emerates, West Germany and USA.
