The South Jersey Fly Fishers

The South Jersey Fly Fishers What started as a test is now an outlet for one of my life passions. I mostly post about flies I tie. I try write some interesting shorts as well. Enjoy.

I want to see if there would be enough interest in a full service fly shop with guided outings in fresh and inshore salt water fisheries in South New Jersey. I have been fishing the area for thirty years and doing so with a fly for more than twenty. The main targets are large/smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, crappie, carp, and I'm trying to figure out what flies our catfish will eat. There is also

a lake stocked with northern pike in the middle of the state I will have to pilgrimage to often. As for saltwater species striped bass get much of the fame but bluefish, weakfish, and flounder round out the more popular targets. The beauty about the ocean is that there are lots of things that will try to eat a 2 to 3 inch minnow. There will also be fly tying and casting classes held periodically through the off season. Please, leave feedback on the page or in a message. I would like to hear what locals and anybody who may run a shop and/or guide have to say.

Good bye 👋 "known to the state of California to cause cancer" Fight Club fly line. Hello new hotness. It's actually both of my favorite line colors on one.

I saw a fly from Fly fishing the Ozarks I believe. It was called a knucklehead and I thought it would be perfect to fish with a sinking line so I made one. It's rough compared to the pictures I saw but should still work well. I like to glue two sheets of foam together for almost any bug to increase durability.

After a long hiatus I am back. Had to take some time putting a big puzzle together. "I know the pieces fit because I watched them fall away."
Now back to business. I feel silly for not looking for it sooner but I just found a way to elevate my foam block game for the Minecraft bugs and other foam block uses.

What a great day to be fishing. Clowdy, a few leaves on the water but still warm and overcast. This was taken on my break rite before noon.

Here is my favorite spot on The Maurice river. The plants in the water always got me to imagine dinosaurs and how much I wish I could see one. First time I caught a bass here in about 20 years. Had to take a picture even if it is a little one. The other picture I tried cropping and zooming but those brown blobs are turkies. Two moms and 4 or 5 babies. The young were smaller than a chicken but had adult feathers and flew up into the tree overhead to roost.

Top left: Second try at making a fueled leader. It's much easier than I thought and worked better than I hoped. I throw at overhanging branches every chance I get and they way this leader unrolls after the fly line tip has hit the water makes getting under cover a lot easier. It also floats much better so I got a lot less explosive popper pickups. Top right: My favorite Minecraft bug rigged on a curled leader with 15/10 tippet with a steel bite guard because pickerel are everywhere. Bottom left: Made this leader from #15 Maxims green. It is a little long but that's fine since all my water has heavy pressure. Bottom right: Minecraft bug in a fruit salad color on the rare instance I didn't need wire and got to tie a double figure 8 loop knot.
I will try making a short florocarbon leader for a sinking line and see how that works later.

I wish these were in everywhere. It's like wildflowers on the water.

Sorry for the long absence. I got into some small crappie a couple days ago. They were a day saver for sure. The golden color on these is not done justice by my camera/phone.
Also a "pro tip" for those with long vehicles, like pond hopping or blue lining/blobbing, and can't afford a proper rod vault. I can only recommend this if you are driving solo.

I managed a little time on the water today. At Union Lake I found small but enthusiastic pickerel. One even jumped straight out of the water just attacking my fly.
I can't properly spell the name of the park on Lincoln Ave. in Vineland but the carp were just starting to come shallow to spawn. Fishing there is going to tough until they are done.
