🌊 Deep Water Academy Student Spotlight: TANYA (T)!

Meet T, one of the awesome humans who make our mats such a fun place to train. We asked her a few rapid-fire questions — here’s what she had to say:

🐙If your Muay-Thai style were a sea creature, which would it be and why?

T: It would be something like a newly hatched sea turtle. 🐢 I’m new to the sport and basically, I’m just trying to survive on my way to the water.

🐙One thing you love about training at Deep Water Academy?

T: Everyone is so patient and encouraging. They meet me at my level and don’t try to prove how much better they are than me. It feels like I can train safely. And learn without feeling stupid for what I don’t know. That’s more than one thing so I’ll pretend the question was name something and that’s my answer.

🐙Gloves or mitts - choose wisely (and explain)

T: Gloves for sure. Cause if I’m not the one wearing mitts and I'm wearing gloves; I’m not the one getting hit in the head for not having the mitts in the right place.

Small upgrades. Big difference.

We just added hand wrap winders at Deep Water Academy to make your training smoother, faster, and a little less chaotic. No more fighting your wraps after class—save that energy for the mats.

Train hard. Recover smart. See you on the mat.

Blue Belt Earned. 💙

Today we celebrate a milestone that wasn’t faked, rushed, or bought.

This blue belt represents countless rounds, late nights, tough losses, small wins, and the decision to keep showing up when it would’ve been easier not to. It’s proof of growth—not just in skill, but in discipline, humility, and resilience.

We’re proud of you. You’ve earned every inch of that belt.

And for everyone watching—this is what’s possible. You don’t need to be talented to start, most of us weren’t. You just need to step on the mat and stay consistent.

Your journey is waiting.

Gather ‘round, grapplers — it’s time for another Student Spotlight, where we introduce you to the people responsible for all the mysterious bruises. We asked Luis those hard hitting questions that you’ve come to expect:

🐙What’s something jiu-jitsu has taught you outside the gym?

Jiu-jitsu has reinforced my belief that resilience is essential in life. It has helped me build discipline, humility, and problem-solving skills. It’s not just about getting stronger physically–it’s also about sharpening your focus and mindset. When I say jiu-jitsu, I mean this academy–Deep Water–and this amazing, caring team.

🐙Move you always hope your partner doesn’t do to you?

As for moves I hope my partner doesn’t do… honestly, none. I’m open to experiencing any technique because every roll is a chance to learn. Jiu-jitsu is a constant learning journey. In training, you can always reset, tap, and start again–that’s how we keep improving.

🐙What food would instantly distract you mid-roll?

Food that would instantly distract me mid-roll? Peruvian ceviche! If someone put a plate in front of me–fresh seafood marinated in lime juice with thin slices of red onion, spicy “ají limo,” and crunchy “canchita” corn–I might have to pause rolling for a moment!

Drop a 👊 for Luiz in the comments!

Steel shins. Sharp elbows.
Unbreakable mindset.

At Deep Water Academy, our Muay Thai isn't just about throwing strikes - it's about building warriors who stay calm under pressure.
Pad rounds, sweat on the mats, and the sound of shins meeting pads. This is where toughness is forged.

Calm on the surface. Relentless underneath.
Welcome to Deep Water! Today’s spotlight is on Jeff!!

Q: What brought you to Deep Water Academy in the first place?

I was looking for something new to push my fitness. Weightlifting and CrossFit just weren’t doing it for me anymore. I wanted a challenge, something totally different, and—most importantly—a sense of community. I found all of that and more the moment I walked through the doors of Deep Water Academy. From day one, I’ve been hooked on the art of Jiu Jitsu and how it transforms you. Physically, I’m in the best shape of my life at 50. Mentally, it’s built confidence, resilience, and patience. And beyond that, I’ve found an incredible community—I’ve made some of my closest friends on the mats.

Q: One thing you love about training at Deep Water Academy?

Only one thing? If I had to pick just one, it’s how safe I feel training at Deep Water Academy. At 50 years old, I can train alongside people 20 years younger than me and never feel worried about getting hurt. Jiu Jitsu is intense and the techniques are very real, but the professors and coaches create an environment where safety always comes first. They’re intentional about how we train, who we train with, and how techniques are applied, which makes it a positive place to learn and grow at any age.

Q: Which teammate gives you “character development” rounds?

Honestly, I love everyone who has the courage to show up to Monday and Saturday randori classes—because if you’re there, you’re not afraid of a little character development. Lately, Professors Damond and Jerr have been very committed to developing my character, and I’m genuinely a better jiu jitsu player because of their dedication.

Thanks, Jeff! And thanks to everyone who makes Deep Water Academy the world class training center that it is. Let’s show Jeff some love and keep delving deeper into these waters! 🐙🦾🥋

It’s Student Spotlight time! The series where we celebrate our teammates for their hard work, positive attitudes, and irrational fear of hip-out drills. Today we cornered Kehlin with the hard hitting questions you’ve come to expect.

🐙 What move do you love way more than you should?

I love the mounted triangle because it offers one of the highest percentage moves from one of the safest positions that you could be in and if you get good at it, it is extremely hard to defend

🐙 Move you always hope your partner doesn’t do to you?

I hate being high mounted because it is extremely hard to defend once somebody sets their weight. It's hot and it's uncomfortable

🐙 What food would instantly distract you mid-roll?

I would get distracted by steak because the aromas the look the thought of the flavor of steak. There's almost nothing better than a ribeye

Show Kehlin some love below 👇
At Deep Water Academy, we train hard, look out for each other, and keep the mats safe and welcoming.

🌊 Deep Water Academy Student Spotlight: Jordan!

Meet Jordan, one of the laid back humans who make our mats such a fun place to train. Check this out!

🐙 What’s something jiu-jitsu has taught you outside the academy?

Jiu jitsu has taught me humility, there is always someone who has trained longer or achieved more than you, yet it has also given me great confidence in myself to overcome adversities the more I've learned self-defense to a level I'm confident around anyone I encounter the more I've been able to let go of my ego it's like how Mr. Miyagi from karate kid never got mean or angry or puffed his chest instead he took all negative encounters as an opportunity to teach and grow with a very aggressive person (even though he could smoke them lol). Men who know how to fight are often times the kindest people who have nothing to prove. Ego makes people puff their chests and jiu jitsu has drastically called out that desire within myself for the foolishness that it is.

🐙 One thing you love about training at Deep Water Academy?

I love deep water academy because the combined level of knowledge at this academy is unparalleled to any other, there are no bullies, there is no egos, the people are kind generous teachers who have your best interest and growth in mind, yet at the end of the day are calculated practitioners with a skill level that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. If you look into people's experiences at other academies around the country this is not the case, there are bullies egos injuries and gatekeeping of profound skills. That does not take place at Dave's academy. It is a true blessing that will generate some champions in the sport and in life.

🐙 If an octopus gave you coaching advice, what would it say?

It would have to be along the lines of " don't focus on the one limb that is captured when you still have seven to find a solution. Many greats have found a solution with just one.

Let’s hear it for Jordan👏
If you want a positive, welcoming place to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Judo, Deep Water Academy is the spot.
