West Wilkes Hunter Skills Team

West Wilkes Hunter Skills Team West Wilkes Hunter Skills Team is a group of middle school and high school students from the West Wilkes School District that compete in NC Hunters Ed Program.

This program introduces young adults to the many benefits of shooting sports as well as North Carolina's wildlife management program while emphasizing the importance of safety. We strive to educate members in firearm safety and ethically sound hunting practices, thereby developing better educated and responsible sportsmen, and women, of the future. The program consists of four disciplines in which

members have the opportunity to participate and compete. These disciplines include archery, rifle, shotgun, and hunter skills. Any member may participate in any, or all, of these events.

Some of our team members have spent the summer sharpening up their skills with the Wilkes County 4-H. These young men Trevor J., Austin J., Christian R., Jay L., and Charleston E. competed at the 4-H district event in Ellerbe, NC this past weekend and qualified to go shoot at the 4-H State tournament in October. Archery Team- Austin J, Jay L, Christian R, and Trevor J.

What a great weekend of racing at North Wilkesboro Speedway and the NASCAR . Our team had the opportunity to help the community by volunteering for this spectacular event.

Last year we met Mr. David from Las Vegas and again had the opportunity to work with him this year. What we didn’t know was this was his final race. Mr. David it was a pleasure to work with you and we wish you the best of luck in future endeavors and ENJOY RETIREMENT!

All though we didn’t have time for a parking lot party, we made the most of it. Thank you again for being so nice to us and we will remember you said, “I’ll come out of retirement to work at North Wilkesboro Speedway”.

Enjoyed a great scrimmage with East Wilkes Hunter Skills Team yesterday. A lot of fun hometown friendly competition with West Wilkes Hunter Skills Team coming out on top. We had multiple team members with personal best season scores again this week.

Scrimmage overall winners were as follows: Dillion L. the highest riffle score, Christian R. highest hunter education test score, Austin J. the highest archery score and Charleston E. and Michael K. that shot perfect score of 200 on shotgun. Shout out to Austin J. for being the overall top shooter of the day. Great job by both teams. We can’t thank our sponsors enough for their support. We will be heading to the district tournament in a couple weeks so please keep the kids in your prayers.

Thank you Soggy Bottom for hosting a fun scrimmage yesterday with area teams. We had a great time. Several of our team members had personal best again this week. Keep working hard, it’s paying off. Congratulations to Christian R. and Dayne S. who shot 200 Perfect Score in shotgun.

We had 3 shooters on our team that placed overall in the top 5 out of 154 shooters. Christian R. placed 2nd, Austin J. was 3rd and Dayne S. rounded out the top 5. Extremely proud of each one and your hard work is paying off. Thankful to our sponsors that help us be successful.

Don’t forget Saturday, September 28th at 9am, we are having open range for any 6th -12th grader interested in Hunter Skills.

This is open to students who attend school at West Wilkes Middle School, West Wilkes High School, Millers Creek Christian School, Wilkes Early College High School, and Home schoolers.

Range is located at 2070 N. Minton Road, Millers Creek.

Open range will be held rain or shine.

We will have an open range day on September 28 at 9:00 AM at 2070 N. Minton Road. This will be open to 6th to 12th grade students either at West Wilkes, West Middle, Millers Creek Christian School, the Wilkes Early College High School and any Home School students.
