wo of my juniors that have been training with me for a little over a year have made it on two tennis teams. the younger one will be playing for the Penninsula Tennis Club and the older one will be playing for the PTC and the burlingame High School tennis team. The training I put them through will work will with other juniors.

I recommend that parents should not be coaching their kids. the parents should find a coach that communicates and work well with juniors.

just got an update with two juniors I taught tennis to for over a year. one of the them has been moved up in the tryouts to play with higher level players!....this is a very good sign!...I believe that she will be on the Burlingame HIgh School tennis team this year. Also both her and her sister have been asked to join another junior tennis team as well. The year I had with them they learned every shot....how to use strategy with these shots...and ways to handle the stress and the emotions that come up during a match. This method would work well with any junior. I am so proud of them!

think high schools that have 8 tennis courts or more should make those courts available for USTA or ITF junior tournaments. I Burlingame where I live they have two off them! Also high school programs should have a varsity and junior varsity teams with a no cut policy. this policy should be the standard.

When starting to play tennis (especially in a tournament setting) two things are going on at once. these two things just happen to affect each other was well. The first of these two is about what things on an emotional level are brought into play. For adults it could be about possibly loosing a job or stress related to expectations. For juniors it could be about the last grade, are they liked on social media or they feel that they are not living up other peoples expectations. the second is in the realm of the physical. this takes the form of the disappointment over the performance of the last match. An example of this would be the forehand or the serve not going well.
for the first one it's all about building a foundation with the player that they are awesome, loved and accepted as they are regardless of a match score. They bring value to the court just because they are there. For the second I use a bit of a mind switch. I say to the player instead of worrying about everything that could go wrong in a match, pick no more than two things that the player wants to work on the next match and forget everything else. this serves to take the pressure of the player and helps build focus and confidence that can be used in future matches.
