What does joy look like when it's grounded in existential architecture instead of escapism?

Our human ancestors have survived so much.

If you're alive on earth today, YOU'VE already survived so much.

Zoom out on the plot line a bit.

What's regenerating as we speak? Defying what we understand about math and science?

What cosmic interplay of forces shape your extraordinary existence within a collective moment?

In the seeing, what floats?

If we hold onto that as we journey ahead, do our steps feel lighter? Does liberation feel more possible? Inevitable?

I'd love to hear what you find...

Tomorrow, I'm sharing a 20-slide carousel essay about the role of humor in liberation.

I shared the spark-notes with my husband, Michael, and he said: "So, basically you wrote about the meaning of life".

Maybe. I'll let each of you decide for yourselves.

I want to cite this lagoon and this moment as one of the primary sources for my writing.

In Sovereign Storyteller, we talk often about how the writing process starts in the living.... long before finger hits keyboard or pen to page.

Are you available for observation, perceiving, noticing? Are you really alive?

We talk about how the writing process includes sleeping, the magic organizing work your brain does when you don't meddle. The sense-making that's co-constructed with divine (ancestral) inspiration. The channeling you're able to do when you let your body-as-the-channel be so deeply nourished through rest, through movement, through care.

Are you stewarding yourself so you can steward your wisdom, your words, your wishes?

Yesterday, I overheard my son chatting with his sister in the backseat:

"Do you know how lucky we are? A lot of kids don't get to go to all these places. Or have a mom and dad."

His sister said: "I know. Everything I wish for, my ancestors give to me."

For so long, I skip telling the stories that I'm sure others won't believe.

Recently, I remembered: Your unbelieving isn't my problem. Few people believes that which they haven't perceived for themselves, that which their belief systems isn't primed to test.

And that's precisely why my stories-as-evidence, musings-as-culture matter so much.

There is an incredibly specific role for each one of us.

Something that makes each of us say: "If not me, then who?"

If not me with [insert: lineages, identities, gifts, connections, trainings, passions] who has [insert: experiences, obstacles overcome, shifts completed, discoveries made] and understands [insert: specific people, communities, problems, needs, processes], THEN WHO?

If not me with [my immigrant story, neurodivergent brain, 12 years of higher ed, filmmaker's eye] who has [found hope after grief, made home in place after place, unlearned self-abandonment, discovered how to gather qi] and understands [the deep ache of third culture humans to find belonging and purpose across multiple worlds that feel like shifting sands beneath their ever sojourning feet], THEN WHO?

Who else will gather the sensitive souls on the margins and teach them to find their voice in their belly, to befriend memory into song, to build gathering halls from unimaginable synchronicities, and weave desires into new normals and collective cultures.

May each one of us live so freely and generously in this thumbprint pocket of existence.

I want you to take bigger risks. [I believe collective liberation depends on it.]

Me telling you this rubs up against the "trauma-informed" norms that have become the emergent status quo in helping fields.

So, I offer you my stories.

I'm a neurodivergent survivor of violent and complex traumas.

And, I have a beautiful relationship with risk, sovereignty, and trust.

I have broken rules every year of my professional (political) life.

My classroom had an open door policy to admin.

Write ups to my and my students refusal to say the pledge of allegiance? Welcomed.

Having a whole school staff campaign to have me fired for mentoring the BSU in their walkout protests against police brutality? Expected.

Having N***s bare their sw****ka tattoos and get in our faces as we marched to make demands of our load government? Ready.

Getting pushed out of my job when I refused to let my radical curriculum be co-opted and tamed? Already had my resumé polished. Got hired in a leadership role in a neighboring district before my contract ended.

I want you to take more risks and I want you to be powerfully resourced a d resilient when you do it.

We are so powerful. I hope you live this truth with every atom in your being.

I believe our collective futures depend on it.

In 2025, I became who I already was.

It took me a few years after moving home to Taiwan to give myself permission to be me here. To set down the suspicion that I might be an interloper.

How could I be? This soil holds the residue from the birth sac that held me in gestation, the shadow imprint of my first steps, the echo of my first words.

Moreover, this island vibrates with the very much present tense movements of my living elders, the ones who raise me and every time I'm in their presence their voice and actions shape me into who I've always wanted to be.

As a mama here now, I witness these spaces, voices, and rumblings shape my babies in a way that is akin to the fantasies I held for my own childhood, growing up an ocean away from here.

I've wanted to come home for so long. Funny how getting what you want sometimes comes with a period where you keep it in the packaging for a while, afraid you might damage it. Afraid it might disappoint you.

Go deeper? Ah. Afraid you might disappoint them, the whispery ones who tugged you back here, back home. But how can you? You're exactly who they prayed into existence.

Don't you know of all things they hope for for you the foremost is your freedom? Who brings humans into this world without a prayer that they would live good, live free, live with more than everything they need?

Auntie told me once this year that we remember our ancestors so we dont forget we are. And suddenly I understood. The ancestors don't need us to remember them for their sake. Vanity has no currency in the ethers.

Ancestors need us to know ourselves, who we are and where we're from because then we remember the love that formed us. (No matter how f'd up a lineage might be, show me one that was immune to all love. I'll wait.)
If nothing us, the land loved us. Look at this fruit it offers us, these clouds, these sunsets, these waterfalls. Is this not a love letter from those who form our existence?

You know what happens when you remember who you are and where you're from and all that has ever loved you?

You are not easily conquerable. You grow as big as every space and person who feeds you as every decibel that loved you. You get free.

I am so grateful I'm an Asian mama. I love growing old.

I know who I am, where I'm from, where I'm going, and who I came to be. That's a peace I wish for all of you.

Blessings rain down. Stay close by. You'll catch these blessings too. I got plenty to go around.

P.s. this post is 100% about my Taiwan LV bag. Thank you, Tita Lor! .co

As a survivor of multiple forms of trauma and as an autistic human, learning how to reclaim power has been one of my special interests.

This work is nuanced. It must be rooted in context. It must be practiced.

And it is so liberating.

I wish radical power for everyone.

That's why I teach self-responsibility, self-resourcing, and reclaiming imagination and creativity as sovereignty.

If you want to dive deeper, I invite you to follow along or join one of my learning spaces.

Until we all get free.
