We teach him a move.

Not from a video.
Not from a whiteboard.
Knee to knee on the mat, showing him where the hand goes and why it goes there.
He tries it.
We fix it.
He tries again.

That is the whole transmission. It’s how Renzo learned it from the generation before him, and how he passed it to us — one person sitting down across from another, taking the time.

We’re the only Renzo Gracie academy in Connecticut where a 3-year-old’s first roll and an adult’s first competition happen under the same roof — same lineage, same room. Be honest. Twice? A dozen times?

I’m not going to sell you.

Wednesday night at the academy doesn’t look like a highlight reel.

It looks like a 7-year-old drilling the same escape for the tenth time while his dad warms up on the other side of the mat.

It looks like a white belt who started in June getting his first sweep on a purple belt and trying not to smile about it.

It looks like guys in their 40s taping fingers and laughing about it.

That’s the room.

Kids from 3 to 15, adults of every age, BJJ and MMA striking under one roof. Milford, Orange, Shelton, Derby, Ansonia — we’ve got families from all of it.

No one here was good on day one.

Congratulations to Ray on earning his blue belt! 🥋🔵

A blue belt isn’t handed out — it’s earned. It takes roughly a year of solid, consistent work to get here. Showing up when you’re tired. Showing up when you’re sore. Showing up when life gives you every reason not to.

Ray didn’t make excuses. He made progress. Round after round, week after week, he put in the work that most people talk about but never do.

This is a huge milestone, but you know the truth, Ray — the blue belt is where the real journey begins. Keep grinding. 🦁

The mat doesn’t care what you think you are.

You can talk your way through most of life.

You can’t talk your way out of a bad position.

That’s the whole value of this art.
It tells you the truth every night — where you’re stiff, where you panic, where your ego is writing checks your technique can’t cash.
Then it gives you the chance to fix it.

Renzo taught us that the man across from you isn’t your enemy.
He’s the only person willing to show you what you actually need to work on.
Your opponent is your teacher.
Your ego is the problem.

That lesson is 100 years old and it hasn’t changed. It’s the same one we hand to a 7-year-old in the kids class and a 45-year-old on his first day.
