"Wield the paddles together" Welcome to Manu’Iwa – the only Outrigger Canoe Club in Connecticut. Founded in the 1990’s, based originally at a small beach in Milford’s Wildermere Beach area, Manu’iwa Outrigger Canoe Club has grown to include a fleet of OC-6 canoes, OC-2s, OC-1 and several SUP. As a member of the East Coast Outrigger Association, Manu’iwa has competed in many association races, held the championship position, and have had members participate in renowned races in Hawaii. In 2015, the City of Milford granted us a larger location at Gulf Beach, and we’ll do anything to get out on the water! With approximately 70+ members, we welcome new and experienced paddlers all season long! We love taking visitors out into Long Island Sound with us -- all ages and levels of fitness are welcome. Our Gulf Beach boathouse, located in the back parking lot across the street from Goodies is where we store our equipment and meet before each practice. We have a full range of canoes, paddles, PFD’s – everything you need. Just bring some footwear you don’t mind getting wet, bottle of water and perhaps a towel! It’s also free until you become a member – our annual membership dues are cheap! Our scheduled training sessions are Tuesday and Thursday after the working day is finished - and daylight permits. We also paddle on Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. Experienced paddlers and members are also able to take out the smaller (1 or 2 seat) canoes that the club owns or use the 4 SUP’s. Our season runs from April 1 to about November 1st, depending on temperature levels. Some of members paddle throughout the year but that requires a slightly different level of commitment and clothing, and many would say madness! We Do Anything to Be on the Water! …. MO'OLELO MONDAYS: HEIHEI

Heihei in the Hawaiian language means race, as in a canoe race, race on foot, or horse race. 🏁

Manu’iwa just completed our annually sponsored canoe races here in Milford, CT this past weekend! 🛶 Despite some tricky weather on Sunday, we had crews travel from all along the East Coast to race 10 miles on the Long Island Sound out of Gulf Beach. 🌊 We welcomed teams from Washington D.C., Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York, as well as local residents who joined Sunday’s small craft race. 🚣‍♂️

We thank everyone who came out to participate this weekend, our sponsors and donations, and our wonderful volunteers (both on land and in the water!) for helping make this such a successful weekend! 🙏✨

MO'OLELO MONDAY: Hoʻomākaukau🤙

Today's word means to prepare or get ready. Often used as a call/response in the beginning of an event such as a hula, paddle, or event to signal it is time to begin.

This week, we are preparing for our Milford Invitational and Small Craft Race with East Coast Outrigger Racing Association hosted by Manu'iwa and located on our home beach in Milford, Gulf Beach.

All our members are helping to prepare the boats, organize crews and set up for our race this weekend!

Milford, if you are by Gulf Beach this weekend, come cheer on the crews and see what outrigger paddling is all about!

We look forward to hosting all the paddlers!
