October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At Club Pilates Mansfield and Midlothian, we want to help educate the public about breast cancer, promote early detection and screening, and support patients and survivors. Let us introduce Amy Wynkoop, one of our all-time favorite members here at Club Pilates.
Amy's niece encouraged her to try Pilates in 2017 after ankle replacement surgery. After ten years of regular attendance, we asked Amy what Pilates has done for her overall health: “Pilates means so much to me! Core stability, strength, flexibility & relaxation. I LOVE the variety of exercises the equipment provides. Pilates has made all the difference in my recovery after having 6 ankle surgeries. The instructors are all fabulous and fun!”
Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2020 and had a double mastectomy. After testing the tumor, her team of doctors at UTSW decided against chemotherapy or radiation. They put Amy on a hormone blocker, and after 5 years of regular checkups with her oncologist, she was released from their care and the medication!
When asked what advice Amy would give to someone else battling breast cancer, she says, “The thing that helped me the most was knowing that I belong to God, and that my life is in His hands. Some days were very scary, but every time I cried out to Him, I truly felt His presence and peace”
