Why do we dive? THIS!

01/21/2024

I always knew from a young age I didn't want to work in an office or, do my hair or wear heels. From a young age, I knew being underwater was where I felt the most comfortable and happy. I love this shot of me peacefully swimming along the side of the Cornelia B. Windiat in 185ft of water. I can feel the cold, I can hear the silence, and truly be immersed in history. When I shoot, I can feel the shot and the environment. This is me. Photo by my buddy Jefflindsay.ca

What is Nitrox and why should every scuba diver use enriched air Nitrox? By Timothy P Burch

Nitrox, also known as Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx), is a breathing gas mixture used in scuba diving that has a higher oxygen content compared to regular air. While regular air consists of approximately 21% oxygen, Nitrox typically contains between 32% to 40% oxygen.

Diving with Nitrox offers several benefits for scuba divers, both new and experienced, especially when traveling. Here are a few reasons why Nitrox is commonly used:

1. Extended Bottom Time: Nitrox allows divers to stay underwater for longer periods compared to diving with regular air. The increased oxygen content reduces nitrogen absorption in the body, thus extending the no-decompression limits and decreasing the risk of decompression sickness.

2. Reduced Fatigue: Nitrox can help reduce nitrogen narcosis, also known as the "nitrogen narcosis hangover." This can lead to less fatigue and improved mental clarity during dives, making it particularly useful for multiple or repetitive dives in a day.

3. Faster Surface Intervals: With Nitrox, divers can have shorter surface intervals between dives. As Nitrox reduces the amount of nitrogen absorbed, less time is required for off-gassing, allowing for quicker turnarounds between dives.

4. Safer Decompression Profiles: When conducting dives close to the no-decompression limits, using Nitrox can provide a safety buffer by increasing the available time before reaching those limits. This allows divers to have a more conservative decompression profile and reduces the risk of decompression sickness.

5. Better Gas Management: Nitrox allows for safer gas management during repetitive diving. The reduced nitrogen absorption means less accumulation during subsequent dives, reducing the risk of reaching no-decompression limits.

When traveling, using Nitrox can be particularly beneficial due to the following reasons:

1. Remote Dive Destinations: Some remote dive destinations may have limited access to medical facilities or hyperbaric chambers. Using Nitrox helps minimize the risk of decompression sickness, providing an extra level of safety.

2. Dive Trip Optimization: When traveling for a limited period, using Nitrox allows divers to maximize their time underwater. The extended bottom time provided by Nitrox can enhance the diving experience and make the most out of the trip.

It's important to note that diving with Nitrox requires special training and certification. Scuba divers must complete the Enriched Air Nitrox course to understand the specific considerations and safety procedures associated with using Nitrox.

At Dive And Glide, we provide a wide range of dive specialty classes, but among them, none is more significant than the Nitrox Diver course. Currently, Nitrox classes exclusively focus on the academic aspect. To enroll, you simply need to complete an online class and participate in an academic review session at Dive And Glide.

Welcome to the exciting world of scuba diving! By Timothy P Burch

As a beginner, here's an overview of what you can expect when starting your scuba diving journey:

1. Discovering Scuba Diving: Dive & Glide diving centers offer a program called Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) or Try Scuba, which allows you to experience scuba diving under the guidance of an instructor. This introductory session gives you a taste of breathing underwater and the sensation of weightlessness.

2. Open Water Diver Course: The Open Water Diver course is the first official certification level in scuba diving. It provides you with the knowledge and skills to dive safely with a buddy to a maximum depth of 18-20 meters (60-65 feet). The course typically consists of theory sessions, confined water training in a pool, and open water dives.

3. Theory: You'll learn about dive physics, physiology, equipment, safety procedures, and the underwater environment. This knowledge is essential for understanding diving principles and staying safe underwater.

4. Confined Water Training: In a controlled environment like a swimming pool, you'll practice essential diving skills under the supervision of an instructor. This includes assembling and adjusting your scuba gear, underwater breathing, buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery, and emergency procedures.

5. Open Water Dives: Once you've gained confidence in the pool, you'll move on to open water dives. These dives take place in natural bodies of water, such as the ocean, lakes, and quarrys by your instructor, you'll apply your skills and explore the underwater world, witnessing marine life and beautiful environments.

6. Certification: Upon successful completion of the Open Water Diver course, you'll receive a certification card from a recognized diving organization, such as PADS, SSI, and SDI. This certification allows you to dive independently (with a buddy) within certain depth limits.

7. Continuing Education: Scuba diving offers a wide range of specialties and advanced courses to further enhance your skills and knowledge. Some popular options include Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Nitrox diving, underwater photography, and more. These courses allow you to explore different aspects of diving and expand your diving horizons.

Remember, safety is paramount in scuba diving. Always dive within your training and comfort level, follow the guidance of your instructor, and adhere to diving rules and regulations. With proper training, practice, and a sense of adventure, scuba diving can provide you with unforgettable experiences and a lifelong passion for exploring the underwater world.

I never knew engines inside wrecks could become a fe**sh. I admit it: I like engines! This is inside the Eber Ward in Lake Michigan. The Eber Ward sank when it's hull was ripped open by ice in 1909.
