This morning, the Ole WoodButcher successfully executed a swift hunt using the new prototype call introduced this year. Although limited quantities are available this year, it will undoubtedly be widely accessible next year. We currently have a few units available for those interested. Returning to the hunt, this bird has significantly impacted my self-confidence and morale after several missed opportunities last year and close calls this year. Setup commenced at 5:30 am near his habitual roost area where he tends to fly down to. He began gobbling at 6:02 am, a few soft tree yelps and a little soft scratching he flew down at 6:30 am, and was harvested at 6:30:02 am. Uncharacteristically, he landed merely four steps away from me, contrary to my anticipation of him being around 25 yards away in his usual area. Upon landing, he sensed something was amiss, and I seized a single chance to take him down with a precise shot to the waddles. The bird weighed 21 pounds, had a 9 1/2-inch stringy thin beard, and 1 1/4-inch spurs. Following the hunt's conclusion, I felt a mix of excitement and melancholy, prompting me to wish the turkey gods bless him with 72 hens and no more predators.
