The Lake Beseck draw down is set to begin on Nov 1st. This year there will be a 3ft draw down, compared to last years 6ft draw down.

This process starts when the CT DEEP slightly opens the Lake Beseck dam to allow extra water to release and expose the outer edge of the lake bottom. The reason we expose this area is because the outter edge is where nuisance aquatic plants typically thrive. The frigid winter air will freeze the thriving plant matter and hopefully stunt its growth, resulting in more ideal water recreation without as many weeds.. The draw down also allows those who live in the waters edge to make any repairs to their docks and sea walls.

JUNE 30th, 2022

Good afternoon,

The Southington/Plainville/Middlefield Health District has instructed us to temporarily close the swim area at the beach today. The reason for this is because recent water tests have shown a dramatic increase in bacteria levels. The district is hopeful that the tomorrow’s test results will show low levels and we can open back up. We are closing the swim area, with an abundance of caution, for the remainder of the day.

We hope that you understand the situation and allow the water to naturally filter the bacteria. The district believes that the spike is partially due to the large geese population at Lake Beseck. Please know that this test is only conducted at the beach and the town does not have data about the other areas of the lake.

Today an employee from the health district came out and took additional samples so that they can take another look at the problem. If the levels are within a good range tomorrow we will let you know abs open the swim area up for the Fourth of July weekend. If they continue to be high we will need to close for the Fourth of July weekend. The beach will remain open but the swim area will be closed.
